RATING: ______________

Nucleic acids are composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous
atoms which make them as the largest biomolecules within the body. Their main role is making
up the genes. The building unit of nucleic acids is the nucleotide---consisiting of a nitrogenous
base (e.g adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, uracil), a pentose sugar (deoxyribose, ribose)
and a phosphate group.
There are two major kinds of nucleic acids: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and
ribonucleic acid (RNA). Each differs from their structure, composition and function. DNA
contains the genetic code/instructions for hereditary characteristics of the cell while RNA is
directly involved in protein synthesis.
OBJECTIVES:
After accomplishing this activity, the students will be able to:
1. Examine the structure of DNA and RNA molecules and relate each part functionally to
the process of protein synthesis.

MATERIALS/RESOURCES:
Reference Book: Human Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine N. Marieb and Katja Hoehn
Internet
Project materials

PROCEDURE:
A. INSTRUCTOR
1. The instructor discusses DNA and RNA
2. The instructor uses visual aids to present the DNA and RNA structure.
3. The instructor presents a video of DNA and RNA model making using the internet.

B. STUDENTS
1. You listen attentively; take down notes of the discussion.
2. You watch the video and take note of the model making materials and process.
3. You make a DNA or RNA model using the video as a guide.
4. Exhibit your output in front of the class.
5. Take a picture of your output, label the parts and attach it to your activity results
sheet.
