Packaging Design for Jowar Roti.

Context Topic

Grass Root Product and Service Design The topic chosen was the service of providing

This Course explored the grass root level innovations that occur both with products and services in the rural areas when common authentically made Jowar Roti to the citizens of
people develop their own solutions to fulfill their various needs. This development typically takes a 3 step approach : Hyderabad. The aim was to study the

1. A solution is created by gestures of the body and often without using any material. eg, drinking water with two folded hands, acting process and service provided by the Women
as containers.
Entrepreneurs in the city of Hyderabad and help them
2. When this need repeats itself often, gesture is turned into a material object, like a water drinking glass. in enhancing their service in the best possible way.

3. When we increase the number of users for this glass and bring in more factors of costs, new market opportunities, new materials,
new life styles, sustainability and so on, we design the glass differently.

In this Course, students were encouraged to stay close to the spirit of ‘jugaad’, a grass root level innovation practice but to also
address the issues of safety, local making, local maintenance etc.
Two sets of young designers emerged. One set looked at product innovations and proposed more formalized and better performing
solutions in Product forms. Second set of designers set out to propose solutions in Service forms.Design Process followed was similar
and had the following broad steps:

A thorough exploration and with personal choice, picking up of an issue (or topic/theme/need/opportunity).
Research into all requirements to address that issue.
Generating a specific Design Brief.
Ideations, Visualisations, blue prints of service solutions to address that Brief.
Preparations of Mock ups, Models, Prototypes to test with user groups.
Checking/Testing with user groups, compiling feedbacks.
Producing the Final outcome either in a Product form or in a Service form after incorporating Feedbacks.
Research 1

A Field Study was done in order to

understand the service and some information and

observations were noted. Factors to be considered in

Design Brief Ideations

First material which came to mind was Cloth, as it is

used by farmers to carry roti with them to their farms

and the roti stays in a great

condition for 2-3 hours.

So, some of the explorations were done with muslin

cloth and a deposit system was also thought of dur to

packaging. Few Potlis were given free to the women

to try it and sell it to the customers for 5 Rs.

This packaging is completely sustainable. There is

no throwing system. The potli can be washed just in

water and reused. This can

the roti and the people healthy.

The feedback got from the women was that the potli

was a bit small in width. So, the size of the potli had

to be increased.

People, on the other hand, have to be made aware of

packaging.
The posters were made in three different languages-

English, Hindi and Telugu as the local language used

here is Telugu.

The main aim while designing the poster was to

convey the message just using pictures and less

writeup.
