I. Introduction
In this experiment, a number of chemical reactions was done and examined with noticeable signs. Our
group performed 9 reactions of metal ions and inorganic compounds with observable chemical changes
such as the change in color, the formation of a solid, the release of gas, and the production of heat and light

II. Experimental

1. Reactions of Cu2+

Reaction Observation Chemical Equation


0.5M CuSO4 + 2M NaOH - Before add 10 more drops 2M NaOH: 2NaOH + CuSO4 → Cu(OH)2↓ + Na2SO4
Appeared light blue precipitate
- After add 10 more drops 2M NaOH:
Precipitation turned darker.
0.5M CuSO4 + 2M NH4OH - Before add 10 more drops of NH4OH: 4NH4OH + CuSO4 → (NH4)2SO4 + Cu(OH)2↓
Supernate turned into dark blue, appeared
light blue precipitate 4NH4OH + CuSO4 → 4H20 + [Cu(NH3)4]SO4

- After add 10 more drops of NH4OH:


Supernate became darker, the amount of
precipitate decreased
0.5M CuSO4 + 0.5M
K4[Fe(CN)6]

2. Reactions of silver halides

- Appeared white precipitate on supernate’s AgNO3 + KCl → AgCl↓ + KNO3

+ 2M NH4OH surface and at the bottom of test tube AgCl + 2NH4OH → 2H2O + Ag(NH3)2Cl
- After add NH4OH: Precipitate dissolved
0.5M KCl + 0.1M AgNO3
+ 2M KCN

0.5M KBr + 0.1M AgNO3 - Appeared creamy white precipitate on AgNO3 + KBr → AgBr↓ + KNO3

+ 2M NH4OH - After add NH4OH, the amount of
precipitate stay still

3. Reactions of H2O2

0.1M KMnO4 + 2M H2SO4 - After add H2O2: Solution became 4KMnO4 + 6H2SO4 → 4MnSO4 + 2K2SO4 + 5O2 + 6H2O
+ H2O2 transparent, the original color of KMnO4 is
lost
0.1M KI + 2M H2SO4 - Before add H2O2: Solution has the color H2O2+ H2SO4 + KI → H2O + I2↓ + K2SO4
+ H2O2 of apricot yellow
- After add H2O2: Solution turn into a
combination color of umber brown and
dark violet
H2O2 + MnO2 - Bubbling on supernate’s surface H2O2 + MnO2 → MnO2↓ + O2 + H2O
- Supernate turned into umber brown
because of black precipitate of MnO2

4. Reactions of Nitrate

1M NaNO3 + FeSO4 - After add FeSO4: Solution turn 4H2SO4 + 2NaNO3 + 6FeSO4→ 3Fe2(SO4)3 + 4H2O + Na2SO4 + 2NO
+ concentrated H2SO4 into light yellow
- After add H2SO4: Solution
became more transparent
1M NaNO2 + FeSO4 - After add FeSO4: Solution turn 2NaNO2 + 2FeSO4 + 2H2SO4 → Fe2(SO4)3 + 2NO + Na2SO4 + 2H2O
+ concentrated H2SO4 into dark yellow green
- After add H2SO4: Test tube is
heated, solution did not change
color
1M NaNO3 + FeSO4 - Solution turned into light yellow NaNO3 + 2FeSO4 + 6CH3COOH→ NaNO2 + 2(CH3COO)3Fe + 2SO3 + 3H2O
+ concentrated

5. Reactions of KMnO4

Reaction Observation Chemical Equation


0.5M Na2SO3 + 2M H2SO4- - After add KMnO4: Solution made 3H2SO4 + 2KMnO4 + 5Na2SO3 → 3H2O + 2MnSO4 + 5Na2SO4 + K2SO4
+ 0.1M KMnO4 the color of KMnO4 lost
0.5M Na2SO3 + 6M NaOH - After add KMnO4: Solution stay 2KMnO4 + Na2SO3 + 2NaOH → H2O + Na2SO4 + K2MnO4 + Na2MnO4
+ 0.1M KMnO4 still, did not change the color
0.5M Na2SO3 + H2O - After add KMnO4: Supernate H2O + 2KMnO4 + 3Na2SO3 → 2KOH + 2MnO2↓ + 3Na2SO4
+ 0.1M KMnO4 turned into umber brown because
of black precipitate of MnO2

6. Reaction of Potassium Dichromate (K2Cr2O7)

2M K2Cr2O7 - After add H2SO4: Solution turn 3C2H5OH + 8H2SO4 + 2K2Cr2O7→ 3CH3COOH + 11H2O + 2K2SO4 + 2Cr2(SO4)3
+ 6M H2SO4 into Iodine’s color
+ C2H5OH
- After add C2H5OH: Solution
turned from Iodine’s color to dark
yellow green

7. A. Reactions of Fe3+

0.5M FeCl3 + 0.5M KCN
0.5M FeCl3 + 0.1M KSCN
0.5M FeCl3 + 2M KOH - Fawn yellow solution became lighter KOH + FeCl3 → KCl + Fe(OH)3↓
- Appeared hazel brown precipitate at
the bottom of test tube
0.5M FeCl3 + 0.5M K4[Fe(CN)6]
0.5M FeCl3 + 2M NH4OH - Fawn yellow solution became lighter 3NH4OH + FeCl3 → 3NH4Cl + Fe(OH)3↓
- Appeared hazel brown precipitate at
the bottom of test tube

8. Reactions of Al3+

0.5M Al2(SO4)3 + 2M NaOH - Appeared white colloidal precipitate Al2(SO4)3 + 6NaOH → 2Al(OH)3↓ + 3Na2SO4
0.5M Al2(SO4)3 + 2N NaOH - Before add 2M HCl: Appeared white Al2(SO4)3 + 6NaOH → 2Al(OH)3↓ + 3Na2SO4
+ 2M HCl colloidal precipitate Al(OH)3 + 3HCl → AlCl3↓ + 3H2O
- After add 2M HCl: the amount of
precipitate increased
0.5M Al2(SO4)3 + 2M NaOH - Before add 10 more drops of 2M Al2(SO4)3 + 6NaOH → 2Al(OH)3↓ + 3Na2SO4
+ 2M NaOH NaOH: Appeared white colloidal Al(OH)3 + NaOH → 2H2O + NaAlO2
precipitate
- After add 10 more drops of 2M NaOH:
White colloidal precipitate dissolved
