INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Project

Temperature is a measurement of hotness and coldness. Temperature varies because of change in

altitude and heat coming from the sun. Hence, different seasons are used depending on the position of
the Earth in its orbit. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter are the seasons that usually occurs on the
north part of the earth. On the other hand, tropical countries like the Philippines only has wet season and
dry season. Tropical countries suffer from extreme heat especially countries near the equator where
concentrated sunrays mostly pass through.

In the Philippines, heat is unbearable during summers. Specifically, in Manila, the highest temperature
recorded by PAG-ASA for the year 2018 was 36.8°C and has a heat index of 40.3°C. Heat index is the
apparent temperature that the skin or human can feel or perceive. Long term exposure to heat may cause
exhaustion, dehydration, and even heat stroke. Heat affects the workforce of a country since its workers
will experience exhaustion at a much faster rate.

In line with this problem, engineers had developed a solution that will make the air cooler and controlled.
Air conditioners was introduced in the year 1902 by Wills Haviland Carrier. Carrier’s design was used to
improve a printing plant where through the use of air-conditioner, he managed to control the humidity
and temperature that allows the paper and ink alignment to be consistent.

A building that is usually filled with people may get crowded and suffocated if the air is not controlled
properly. With this, most building installs air-conditioning units to keep a cool and well-maintained air
inside the building. St. Thomas Square, a commercial building in Espanya , Manila, uses sets of
conditioners to maintain a comfort cooling. When there are a large group of people in the building, the
air-conditioner cannot maintain the temperature and humidity due to the latent heat that is given by the
human body and outside air. This causes a problem for daily operation as a commercial building.
