1 Introduction

At the request of the Netherlands Airport Consultants BV at ’s-Gravenhage, Wiertsema & Partners
International B.V. have performed a geotechnical investigation and topographical survey BES
Airport St. Eustatius at St. Eustatius.

The work was performed in the period from August 26th 2013 till September 12th 2013 and
consist of the following operations:
- Topographical survey.
- Pavement investigations.
- Geotechnical investigations.

2 Topographical Surveys

2.1 Measurement methodology

To perform the required accuracies, the topographical survey is executed by a Leica total station
(X-, and Y-coordinates) and with a Leica-DNA-precision levelling device (Z-coordinates).

2.2 Survey areas

The following features have been surveyed:
- Ditches.
- Drainage facilities.
- Runway.
- Roads.
- All markings.
- AGL, including AGL-pits.
- Other important features of the terrain like highest points .

2.3 Accuracy of measurements

The topographical survey has existed from the surveying of various grids (5x5 m, 10x10 m and
25x25 m).
The measurement accuracies used for this purposes are as follow:
- Temporary benchmarks X-, and Y-coordinates ± 10 mm Z-coordinates ± 5 mm.
- Topographical survey airside pavements X-, and Y-coordinates ± 10 mm Z-coordinates
± 5 mm.
- Topographical survey other areas X,- and Y-coordinates ± 10 mm Z-coordinates ± 5 mm.

2.4 Survey data-deliverables

The deliverables include:
- The drawings shows the pavement layout and the contour lines, benchmarks, drainage
structures, markings and any other relevant details.
- Digital (DTM Autocad 2010 file.dwg format) copy of drawings shows the pavement layout
and the contour lines, benchmarks, drainage structures, markings and any other relevant
details.

The drawing can be found in attachment 1.

3 Pavement invest igations

3.1 Execution
The pavement investigation has consisted of the following operation:
- 14 drilling cores from existing asphalt pavement.
- 14 Dynamic Cone Penetrations (DCP) tests in the core holes.
- Repair of the pavement with dried concrete.
- Laboratory testing of the 14 cores drilled from existing pavement.

3.2 Laboratory test pavement

The laboratory test has consisted of the following operations:
- 14 times measuring thickness of asphalt layers.
- 5 times measuring thickness of concrete layers.
- 5 times determining the compressive strength of concrete.
- Digital colour Photographs of cores.

3.3 Pavement Investigation deliverables

The deliverables are including:
- Drawing with the location of cores and DCP-tests (attachment 1).
- Description of asphalt and concrete cores including digital colour Photographs of cores
(attachment 2).
- Field logs of DCP-tests (attachment 3).
- Determining the compressive strength of concrete (attachment 4).
- List with X-, Y-, and Z-coordinates of cores and DCP-tests (attachment 7).

4 Geotechnical Investigations

4.1 Execution
The geotechnical investigation has consisted of the following operations:
- 3 trailpits to a depth of 3 m-GL or until solid Rock or cemented Material is encountered,
whichever is less.
 VN-58647-1
page 6

- Sampling and Visual description of each soil layer.

- Digital colour Photograph of each test pit.

4.2 Laboratory test

The laboratory test has consisted of the following operations:
- Soil description of samples.
- 13 times Determination of moisture content ASTM D2216, method A.
- CBR test ASTM D1883-07.

4.3 Geotechnical Investigation deliverables

The deliverables include:
- Drawing with the location of trialpits (attachment 1).
Soil stratification and depth of layers including digital Photographs
from trialpits (attachment 5).
- Determination of moisture content (attachment 6).
- List with X-, Y-, and Z-coordinates of location of trialpits (attachment 7).

5 Tests not performed

For the trialpits the following test is not performed:

- Field density test (ASTM D1556): reason is that the major part of the founded soillayers is
not suitable to do the test according to ASTM D1566.: Organic soils and soils consisting
of unbound granular materials that will not maintain stable sides in the test hole, soils
containing appreciable amounts of course maerial larger than (38mm) and granular soils
having high void ratios. Are not suitable to do the test according to ASTM D 1566
Standard test Method for Density and Unit Weight of Soil in Place by Sand-Cone Method.

6 Quality as surance

The geotechnical Investigation and topographical survey is carried out under our quality system
NEN-EN-ISO 9001 and our environmental management system NEN-EN-ISO-14001. Wiertsema &
Partners B.V. meets the safety standard SCC **.
