5. DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT:

INTERNAL COMBUSTION OPERATION OF THE DIESEL ENGINE:

The blowers are arranged in series that provide the air to compress and
force into the cylinder for expelling the exhaust gases and to supply the cylinders
with fresh air for combustion. The cylinder wall contains a row of parts that are
above the piston when it is at the bottom of it stroke. These parts admit the air from
the blower into the cylinders as soon as the rim of the piston uncovers the parts.

The unidirectional flows of air toward the exhaust valves produces a

scavenging effect, leaving the cylinders full of clean air when the piston again
cover the inlet parts. As the piston continues on the upward stroke, the exhaust
valves close and charge of fresh air is subjected to compression.

Shortly before the piston reaches its highest position (top dead center), the
required amount of fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber by the unit fuel
injector. The intense heat generated during the high compression of the air ignites
the fine fuel spray immediately. The combustion continues until the fuel injected
has been burned. The resulting pressure forces the piston downward (bottom
dead center) on its power stroke.

The exhaust valves are again opened when the piston is about halfway
down, allowing the burned gases escape into the exhaust manifold. Shortly,
thereafter, the downward moving piston uncovers the inlet parts and cylinder is
again swept with clean scavenging air. The entire combustion cycle is completed
in each revolution of the crankshaft.

From Power Plant Engineering’ by F. Morse;

C16 H32 = average chemical formula for Diesel fuel oil.

Ideal air quality is C16 H32 + 24 O2 = 16 CO2 + 16H2O

Ideal excess air = 30%

Air composition are: N2 = 76.80% and O2 = 23.20%

C16 H32 + 24 O2 = 16 CO2 + 16H2O

C16 H32 + (1.30) 24 O2 + (0.768/0.232) (1.30) (24) N2

= 16 CO2 + 16H2O + (1.30) 24 O2 + (0.768/0.232) (1.30) (24) N2

C16 H32 + 31.20 O2 + 103.28 N2 = 16 CO2 + 16H2O + 7.20 O2 + 103.28 N2

Molecular Weight:

N2 = 28 lb/lb-mol O2 = 32 lb/lb-mol

C16 H32 = 224 lb/lb-mol CO2 = 44 lb/lb-mol

H2O = 18 lb/lb-mol

(224) C16 H32 + (32) 31.20 O2 + (28) 103.28 N2

= (44) 16 CO2 + (18) 16 H2O + (32) 7.20 O2 + (28) 103.28 N2

Dividing both sides by 224;

C16 H32 + 4.45 O2 + 12.91 N2 = 3.14 CO2 + 1.28 H2O + 1.02 O2 + 12.91 N2

The gaseous products are on the right side of the equation, therefore:

CO2 = 3.14 lb O2 = 1.02 lb

H2O = 1.28 lb N2 = 12.91 lb

12.91
Mols of product = (3.14/44) + (1.28/18) + (1.02/32) + ( )
28
= 0.63541 mols/lb-fuel

Exhaust temperature = 508°C = 946.4°F

Atmospheric pressure = 14.70 lb/in²

10.72𝑇 (10.72)(946.6+460) 𝒇𝒕𝟑

Molal Volume = 𝑃
= 14.70
= 𝟏, 𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝒎𝒐𝒍

Volume of gaseous product = (0.63541 mols/lb) x (1,026 ft³/mol) = 652 ft³/lb-fuel

Emission rate of the gaseous product of 250 hp Cummins Engine

= (652 ft³/lb-fuel) x (0.92941lb-fuel/min) = 606 ft³/min

At present This 187 kW (235 kVA) Generating set is intended for use in
lightings, all ACU (Air Condition Unit), emergency equipment and other device
such as CCTV cameras only during the power outage from the local power
distributor, the Zamcelco.

It is believed that the measure institute by the establishment to prevent air

pollution in the area is adequate. However, with the constant awareness on the
danger posed by air pollutants, the management as it progress in its venture, shall
institute, from time to time appropriate parameters to maintain a desirable
standard to meet the anti-pollution requirement.

8. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT MEASURES

The operation of the W Hotel office’s Standby Power Generating set does
not endanger the health aspect of the worker because it does not emit fumes and
other toxic gases/pollutants.

The noise produced will be very minimal (more or less 67db) and considered
to be within the tolerable level of the worker. In addition, the expected noise
produced will have no annoyance effect on neighboring area since the
equipment is installed in an isolated area and that there is a high concrete
perimeter wall around the building and the unit is a sound attenuated.
The protection and the safety of the worker, the W Hotel office has
implemented the needed safety gadgets/devices for their use at all times,
hospital, medical clinics are available 24 hour nearby/fronting the office. The
safety gadgets/devices that will be issued to the operator on duty will consist of
gloves (cotton/rubber), dust gas mask (with filter element), eye goggles, ear
covering/plug to reduce noise and hard hat/safety cap.

The Cummins diesel engine (250 hP) generator set is the only expected
source of air pollution and as well as noise. This diesel engine is always suitably
maintains and checked particularly its fuel injectors. The fuel injectors that are not
well calibrated contributed to the inefficient combustion of the fuel that preceded
the release of black smoke or soot. This CUMMINS diesel engine besides the proper
maintenance of its combustion assemblage are also equipped with a silencer
attached to its smoke pipe so that noise will be greatly reduced.

In addition the office will be doing efficient maintenance activities and

these are the establishment of a Preventive Maintenance (PM) program for the
equipment that could be regularly followed and conduct regular training course
for the operators on the proper operating procedures on the machines. The PM
program will consist of the proper lubricants to be used, period of lubrication,
designed/required spare parts to be replaced and the period of replacing the
oil/fuel filters and air filter element.
