Pellet Feeds for Goats

Why is there a need to pelletize feeds?

Goat raising needs a year-round supply of feeds. But in the Philippines, where there are
two distinct seasons, feeds are more than enough during wet season but insufficient during dry
season. Hence, the technology of processing feeds through pelleting is important.

What are pellet feeds for goats?

Pellet feeds for goats are complete feeds formulated through the process of pelleting feed
ingredients needed to supply the animals nutritional needs for growth and lactation.

Examples of ingredients that can be pelletized are as follows:

 Leaf Meal

The leaves of leguminous tree species such as ipil-ipil, kakawate, and Resonii can be
processed into leaf meal to serve as protein source in the diet.

 Concentrates

These feed ingredients are commercially available and will provide bulk of the energy
and true protein needed by the animals

 Mineral Supplements
These are important sources of minerals like Calcium, Phosphorus, Sodium, and
Chloride.

What are the steps in Pelleting?

 Produce leaf meal

- Dry the fresh leaves for 3-4 days to attain 80-85% dry matter.

-Using hammer mill, grind the dried leaves to pass through 1 mm screen mesh. If hammer mill
isn't available, pound the desired leaves with mortar and pestle until the desired particle size is
attained.

 Formulate a ration made up of leaf meal as basal diet (40-50% of the mixed ration),
concentrate and mineral supplement.
 Spray sufficient amount of water to attain the desired binding effect.
 Pour the ration into the machine to produce pellets. Pellets should be 20-25 mm in length
and 8 mm in diameter.
 Sundry the pellets for 2-3 days to attain moisture content of 10%.
 Store in plastic bag or other packaging materials at room temperature

What do you think is the overall impact of the scientist’s work to society?

 As an agriculture student and a millennial goat raiser, the work of Dr. Edgardo Orden
makes the life of goat raisers becomes easy because in using pellet feeds, it makes
feeding more efficient; enables animal raisers to obtain better quality of feeds, reduces
labor, increases productivity because of faster growth rate of goats and more milk yield
from lactating goats; requires lesser space during storage and can be stored at room
temperature.
