UDL (UNIVERSAL DESING LEARN)

Developed by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST). The DUA approach
focuses on the design of the school curriculum to explain why there are students who
fail to achieve the expected learningThe DUA framework stimulates the creation of
flexible designs from the beginning, that present customizable options that allow all
students to progress from where they are and not from where we imagine they are
(CAST, 2011: 3)

The latest research in the field of neuroscience has shed much light on how the brain
behaves during the learning process. Technological advances have made it possible to
find many evidences that allow us to know the structure of the brain and understand its
functioning in a global and localized way during learning. Thus, it has been concluded
that there is a brain diversity and a diversity in learning.

How to apply the DUA to the curriculum and

teaching practice?

The results of the CAST investigations revealed two

fundamental evidences for the design of the DUA
approach framework. The evidence on the functioning
and diversity of brain networks, as well as the
opportunities offered by digital media to personalize
the learning process, are complemented by the
identification of educational theories and practices that
have proven successful in reducing barriers in
teaching. Thus, the DUA refers to Gardner's theory of
multiple intelligences and Vygotsky's constructivism,
emphasizing

the Near Development Zone (ZDP) and in the

scaffolding concept (Rose and Meyer, 2002).

Based on this research, the CAST developed the

implementation framework of the Universal Design for
Learning in the classroom. As noted above, this
framework is structured in three basic principles, each
Principles of the DUA
The three principles of the DUA lay the foundations of the approach and around them
the practical framework is built to take it to the classroom. These principles have
become an obligatory reference that appears in most of the scientific literature on the
subject. As explained above, they correspond to the three brain networks involved in
learning.

❖ Principle I. Provide multiple forms of representation of information and content

(what of learning), since the students are different in the way they perceive and
understand the information.

❖ Principle II. Provide multiple forms of expression of learning (the how of

learning), since each person has their own strategic and organizational skills to
express what Who knows.

❖ Principle III. Provide multiple forms of involvement (the why learning), so that all
students can feel committed and motivated in the learning process.
