Ask Three, Then Me

Grade: 3-4

Learning Goals: Students will be able to use the ask three then me strategy while learning about
Thanksgiving and why we celebrate the day.

Content objectives: Students will be able to complete crossword about Thanksgiving, while
using the ask three then me strategy.

*Before lesson starts: Assign about 7 people to be ESL Students, tell them that they will need to
ask or answer questions on things they may know the correct answer to.

Introduction:.
● Remind everyone that Thanksgiving is around the corner.
○ Ask if anyone knows why we celebrate Thanksgiving…
○ Also if they know what the word tradition means & what traditions if any their
family may have. *write these down on the board.. One side “why we celebrate”
other “traditions”
● Ask…
○ Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving & what day is it celebrated on?
■ Raise of hands… call on people
○ At this point if someone does not know the day you say
○ “Call on a friend to help you out”
○ Repeat this 3 times and then you finally tell the students the answer…
■ Thanksgiving is a day that we come together with friends and family.
Often times there is a large feast, that includes a turkey.
■ Thursday
*This will be the first introduction to the ask three then me*
● Present poster on Ask Three Then Me!
○ Explain why it is important and when it is appropriate to use… ask
■ When doing a worksheet? (y)
■ When taking a test? (N)
■ To go to the bathroom? (Maybe)
■ About a math problem? (Y)
■ How to spell a word? (Y)

Part 1:
● Introduce the Cross Word Puzzle
○ Remind students of the words that were written up on the white board (then erase)
● Elect 2 students to hand out crossword worksheet
Activity 1:
● Give students about 5-6 minutes to complete crossword ALONE if they do not know
remind them to ask a neighbor or 3… then you
○ Walk around classroom, helping student when needed
Assessment:
● Correct as a class
● After collect the crosswords and proceed to next activity

Part 2:

Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify and associate pictures on a bingo card.

Concept Objective: Students will be able to listen to the definition of a word and match it to the
picture on the bingo card, while using the ask three then me strategy.
● BINGO
○ Count off in groups by 7 so there are 4 people in each group
● Have one person from each group come and grab a BINGO sheet
● Have another person from each group grab bingo markers
● Explain that the rules
○ “I will give a description of the picture and you must find the photo that
corresponds”
○ One person at a time goes in the group of 4
○ When you are unsure or need help turn to your 3 other group mates, if no one
knows then you may raise your hand and ask Kelli or Quinn

Ending:
● Give out prize to winning group (candy)
● Review the ask three then me strategy
● Then if time allows ask about more traditions students may have.
