The passive voice

Uses Form

-We do not know who did something -ing form: verb+-ing form
-It is not obvious or not important I prefer being asked beforehand.
-To include the subject +by -infinitive: be+ passive infinitive
-More common in writing He agreed to be photographed
-Cannot be used with intransitive or state - need +-ing with passive meaning
verbs My car needs washing.

Impersonal passive structures


-subject+passive verb+to+-ing
He is said to be a good driver. Have/get +object+past participle
- it+passive verb+ that clause -Somebody else does something for us

It is said that it will rain more. - To emphasize that something has


happened unexpectedly or by accident
- There+passive verb+to be
There are said to be important floods.
