OVERVIEW
Tired of government inaction around climate disruption, internationally renowned global arts
initiative, Micro Galleries has launched a world-wide day of creative action in response to one of
the biggest threats of our generation. As a platform that has been taking several actions to
combat climate change and that supports local artists, I believe you would be interested in the
work being created by a group of students from International School Suva who intends to create
a mural to raise awareness on climate change and will join artists from around the world from
Kenya, to Finland, to PNG to Australia.
This inclusive, open platform program is aimed at giving artists and communities around the
world a presence in the climate conversation happening during the U.N Youth and Climate Action
Summit in New York from 21 September, and empowering those on the receiving end of climate
injustice - namely those in developing nations and our country Fiji is one of the first countries that
will feel the effect of climate change making this of high importance to us.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A walk through our future is a mural which is planned to be done at the new bridge in between
the suva market and wharf. This specific bridge was selected as it is located in the centre of the
city therefore will be visible and open to the public. Since the bridge has two sides, we plan to
have two art pieces that contradict each other : one highlighting the beauty of the ocean with
vibrant corals and lively sea creatures while the other side will highlight the effect of climate
change The mural on the bridge will have two sides, one will be a painting of a beautiful ocean
with vibrant corals and healthy sea creatures, while the other side will have a more dull ocean
showing the effect of pollution on the ocean and to highlight coral bleaching in Fiji. Fiji will be one
of the first islands to feel the effect of climate change and therefore we would love to connect to
all our citizens especially kids to come and contribute towards the mural. This will help connect
our citizens, and give a call to many on the importance of climate change.
GOALS
1. To spread and increase awareness on climate change through the expression of art
2. This project aims to bring together artists from all over the world to tackle climate inaction
head on.
ABOUT US
We are a group of year 11 students that are very talented in all forms of art: visual art, drama,
dance, and music. We are currently working with an NGO called mobile kindy. What we do with
mobile kindy is visit local settlements that suffer from extreme poverty and lack of early education
and do arts and crafts while also engaging them in many activities to build their confidence as
they are our future generation and are deprived of the educational experience many of us have.
Activities we do with them are also to raise awareness in climate change and it is a very
concerning issue. In October we are also hosting an exhibition with works from the kids and our
students to fundraise money in order to install solar panels on these villages. Since the kids are
of young age we get them to do activities such as a fish origami which we will hang during our
exhibition. Many of the kids from the village have migrated here in canoes and have also been
born in the ocean, thus we call them the children of the ocean. Which is why climate change is a
very important issue to us.
ABOUT MICROGALLERIES
Micro Galleries is a free, independent global arts initiative that uses art as a vehicle to create
positive change. They do this through creative interventions in public spaces, workshops, art
tours, symposiums, think tanks, and residencies. They work together with communities who are in
some kind of social or creative need, and together create new opportunities, imaginings, and
creative possibilities. Throughout the year they host a range of micro injections, which culminates
in our annual Micro Galleries Festival. Their most recent event is “Disrupting climate change”
which is what we’ve been selected to participate in.
