ACID THICKENER
Acid Thickener is a cationic surfactant that was originally designed to thicken hydrochloric acid, which it does
very effectively on its own; however, when used in combination with sodium chloride (salt), it will thicken a
variety of acid systems including phosphoric, sulfuric, hydrofluoric, citric, oxalic, etc. By varying the ratio
between Acid Thickener and salt, you can adjust the viscosity to a given specification. Acid Thickener is a multi-
functional material that provides thickening, wetting, corrosion inhibition, and perfume solubilization.
TYPICAL PROPERTIES
Appearance, 77° F amber paste
Weight/gallon, 77° F 7.6 lb.
Specific Gravity, 77° F 0.91
Pour Point 80°F (approximate)
Flash Point >200°F
PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES
F Long term viscosity stability
F Easy to solubilize
NOTES: Acid Thickener must be uniform before use. Heat and/or mix as necessary.
Acid Thickener use level should be increased as acid concentration increases.

FORMULATING HINTS
1. Acid Thickener provides wetting and may eliminate the need to use nonionics for wetting and perfume
solubilization. Non-ionics can affect viscosity and by eliminating their use, better viscosity control and
economics can be achieved.
2. Acid Thickener is partially solid at room temperature, and it is critical that the product be completely
homogeneous before use in the lab or plant to ensure consistent viscosity. Slight heating or rolling of the
drum is recommended.
3. We recommend adding 2% of the acid to the water phase first, then add the Acid Thickener, and then add
the remainder of the acid. This lowers the pH of the water, thus allowing the Acid Thickener to be more
readily dispersed. The salt (if used) is then added, followed by perfumes and dyes.
4. If a quat is to be used for disinfectant properties, we suggest a level of 0.1-0.2%. It will affect the
viscosity, so if it is not needed, leave it out.
5. Perfumes also affect the viscosity of acid systems and should be used at levels of 0.3-0.5%. Acid
Thickener will assist in solubilizing perfumes.
