Damped free Vibration:Numerical 1
A mass of 85 kg is supported on a spring which deflects 18 mm under the
weight of the mass. The vibrations of the mass are constrained to be linear
and vertical. A dashpot is provided which reduces the amplitude to
one-quarter of its initial value in two complete oscillations. Calculate
magnitude of the damping force at unit velocity and periodic time of damped
vibration.

Solution:

Given data: mass m = 85 kg

Static deflection, x = 18 mm = 0.018 m
Let,
x0 = initial amplitude
1
x2 = f inal amplitude af ter two complete cycle = 4 (x0 )
x0 x0
x = 1x = 4
2 4 0

Damping force: F = c.x˙

= c
Now,
c c
ξ= cc or ξ = 2mω n (as cc = 2mω n )

∴ c = (2mω n )ξ ...... (1)

x2 = 12 log e (4) = 0.69

2. Damping factor:
δ 0.69
ξ= = = 0.1091

3. Frequency of undamped free vibration:

The natural circular frequency of vibration is,

m.g g
√ √ √ √
k 9.81
ωn = m = x.m = x = 0.018 = 23.34 rad/s

From equation (1); we get,

Damping force at unit velocity;
F = c = (2mω n ) ξ
= (2×85×23.34) ×(0.1091)
= 91.67 N

The time period of damped vibration is,

tp = ω2π = 2π 2 = 2π
= 0.2708 sec
√ √
d 2
ω n 1−ξ (23.34) 1−(0.1091)
