PREFACE

I’ve been attending Kihei Charter School for almost 5 years, and I have always

appreciated everything the staff, students, and teachers have done for me. Since I joined Kihei

Charter, I don’t even recognize the person I used to be before applying. Now the time has come

for me to complete a Junior project, so I’ve decided to give back to the school that ultimately

changed me for the better.

My Junior project will be building a storage unit under the North most staircase that will

be used for landscaping maintenance tools at my school, Kihei Charter. Currently there are tools,

equipment, and supplies under the staircase that are exposed and could be easily taken. The

storage unit will help secure all of the gardening equipment and will match the current building

design. The storage will also help with the safety of preschool students playing in the immediate

area by keeping them from grabbing dangerous tools and equipment. There is only one other

person that has done a project similar to mine. He made a storage unit under the staircase closest

to the cafeteria. Although my project isn’t completely unique, I strive to do much better than they

did and this will be easily achievable with my mentor Aldon Mochida.

PROPOSAL

My driving question is how can give back to school after moving into a new campus?

Since moving into our new campus we ran out of storage quickly and saw that someone made a

storage unit for P.E. equipment. I have asked multiple teachers and spoke to the head of the

school about my idea of making a storage unit and they all had the same reaction that there isn’t

enough storage around the school. Creating a storage unit will help the school secure all the

gardening tools in a locked storage area. It will also help with making the area more organized

and appealing to match the building design. Currently the equipment is all stored under the

staircase facing the street in front of school with no protection and is visible to everyone.

I currently have no knowledge of construction, so I will do lots of research related to

framing, spacing, caulking, interior design, etc. Luckily I was able to get a mentor who is a civil

engineer and has been working in construction for over 20 years. Time will be major limitation

as I won’t be able to work on my project when students are on campus, especially since my

project is next to the preschool. I will also try to get as many donations as possible so I don’t go

over budget. Hopefully this won’t be too much of a problem because my mentor is the founder of

his own construction company and will supply us with some resources. I will also need to

provide food, refreshments, gloves, and a first-aid kit for the people that will be helping with

constructing my project.

The 21st century skills that I’ll use are Information skills, Communication skills, Self

directional skills, Thinking And Problem Solving Skills, Interpersonal skills, Financial,

Economic, & Business Literacy, and Civic Literacy & Engagement. I’ll be combining all of

these skills before I even start the physical part of my project. I’ll have to research everything

related construction and communicate with peers for donations, tool usage, meetings, etc. I will

be researching, taking notes, making engineering sketches, and online 3D sketches by myself. I

have to communicate with construction companies to get donations and understand what my

budget is and how to get the best deals. Doing this project will require the usage and

improvement of almost all 21st Century skills which will help me with future community

projects.

I expect to turn this project in a similar fashion as this project proposal but extremely

detailed. It will explain my project and have pictures of the area that I am working with before

and after the project is complete. It will have detailed logs for each day and exactly what we did

during the time we spent on site. My final product will also include descriptions of each meeting

I have with my peers stating what we discussed. It will be a large packet consisting of around 40

pages.

Clement, Joshua. “How to Install Wall Paneling : Walls & Paneling.” YouTube,

Ehowathomechannel, 1 Nov. 2013, https://youtu.be/eszyqa4tDrI.

To install wall paneling you’ll need panels, a hammer, and paneling nails. You first want

to cut the panel to size then hammer the nail into the stud at the top. After this you want hammer

some nails into the baseplate of the panel which is located at the bottom of the panel. If the panel

is short you want to avoid putting nails into the middle of the panel because it’ll set off the panel.

After nailing the top and the base you want to nail off all the studs.

Mochida Aldon. “Opinion on Project Idea.” Expert Interview, Pro-Bilt Construction Co.

Inc. 28 Sept. 2019

We went over my project idea to see how plausible it was and he said it would be fairly

easy to do the physical part of the project but the planning is what’s gonna take most of your

time and effort. After discussing that I was making a storage area at my school we drove to the

campus to check out the area. He noticed all of the tools and equipment under the staircase and

also checked the area for bathrooms and power outlets nearby. He confirmed that this won’t be

too hard of a project to complete it is just the write up, planning and being a leader that will be

the challenge.

Hazelton, 13 Aug. 2014.

I learned that from this video it would be most convenient to have pre cut wooden planks

so all you have to do is use a nail gun and attack them. For the most part I’ll be using the same

dimensions so the 2x4 planks will have to be 16 inches apart. I’ll need as much help as I can get.

I will also have to find vertical siding and nail that on the outside of my storage unit.

“2019 List of Top Building Materials & Construction Distributors.” Modern Distribution

Management RSS, https://www.mdm.com/2019-top-building-materials-construction-distributors.

This is a list of possible distributors that I could communicate with to see if I could get

any donations of supplies for my project. I’ll most likely get supplies from HD supply White Cap

because my mother works there and could easily get donations of supplies needed. There is also

a possibility of me communicating with RME Construction Supply Co. and Pro-Bilt

Construction Co. Inc.

BUDGET

I’ll be trying my best to communicate with multiple construction suppliers to get material

donations that I will need for this project. If all goes well I will only be paying for supplies that

will be used on site. For 2 boxes of 28 safety glasses it will be $27.98, this amount will be

necessary because not all workers will reuse the same glasses each day and might need new

ones. For a pack of 12 heavy duty gloves it will cost $37.32. This will be necessary because we

will be working in a construction environment. We will also need water which we will be buying

5 cases of of 24 Hawaiian Isles water bottles because of the weather in kihei so each person will

be drinking around 3 bottles per work day costing $34.95. For the food I will be buying boxes of

Costco pizza each day. This should amount to about 10 total pizzas costing $99.50. When it

comes to the bare minimum budget it would be around $199.75.
