PREFACE

This Lab sheet edition is issued as a guide to efficient execution of

practical/ lab work for Diploma Geomatic course in Malaysia’s
Polytechnics.

It has been prepared and compiled with the assistance and advice
of Geomatic Lab Sheets Committee.

Special credit to officers and personnel from various polytechnics

who contributed valuable information in the preparation process,
the Geomatics Academic Committee who reviewed large part of
lab sheet and the Curriculum & Evaluation Section in the
Curriculum Development & Career Training Division, Ministry of
Education Malaysia
for providing us with a good environment and facilities to complete
this lab sheet.

Course Description

COURSE : DCG6172 REMOTE SENSING

CREDIT(S) : 2

PRE REQUISITE(S) : NONE

SYNOPSIS

REMOTE SENSING equips students with the knowledge of imagery concept. This course
explains the concept of data capture from electromagnetic energy recording, by sensors
brought by airplane or satellite. This course also develops student’s skills in using software
for digital image processing, digital image enhancement and image classification.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. use of the appropriate principles and theories to explain the concept of remote sensing
(C3,PLO1)

2. perform geometric correction using any computer software accurately (P4,PLO2)

3. demonstrate the image classification using any computer software (A3,PLO6)

DCG6172- REMOTE SENSING

Labsheet 1 : Import, Interpretation the satellite Imagery and

Geometric correction using the registration of image to map grid
method

OUTCOMES RTA : 5 hours

Perform geometric correction using any computer software accurately (CLO2)

Duration : 2 Weeks (5 hours)

Total marks : 50 Marks (Report- 20 marks, Practical-30 marks)
Number of persons : Maximum 2 persons in a group
The student were given the satellite image in the LAN (Erdas 7.x ) format and the topography
map. The student required to convert the LAN (Erdas 7.x ) into imagine format (*.img) using
any tools in remote sensing software. After converted the image, the student required to
choose the area of interest. From the image, the student required to do image interpretation
and geometric correction using image to map grid method.

WORK PROCEDURES
a) Import satellite image

Convert the LAN (Erdas 7.x ) into imagine format (*.img) using tools in remote
sensing software.
b) Subset of the image

Perform subset/clipping of the satellite image to your area of interest (AOI)

c) Image interpretation

Instruction to student :
Refer to satellite image. The features in the image include river, water bodies, road,
vegetation, soil and residential area. Explain how you are able to do so base on the elements
of visual interpretation. ( Give your answer in Table 1 )

Features Visual Interpretation

1. River

2. Water Bodies

3. Road

4. Vegetation

5. Soil

6. Residential Area

d) Geometric correction (image to map grid method)

WORK PROCEDURES

Ground control point

 Examine the 10 ground control points (gcp) coordinate from the topography map
Geometric correction
 By using remote sensing software, register the satellite image into true coordinate
system using the 10 ground control points (gcp) coordinate obtained from the
topography map.
 Define the coordinate system of the reference data
 Make sure the RMS error should < 1
 If > 1, then check and redo the ground control point (gcp) and its coordinates.
 Save your output satellite image into new files
 Verify the output satellite image

Labsheet 2 : Geometric correction using the registration of image to

image registration method

OUTCOMES RTA : 5 hours

Perform geometric correction using any computer software accurately (CLO2)

Duration : 2 Weeks (5 hours)

Total marks : 40 Marks ( Report – 20 marks, Practical-20 marks)
Number of persons : Maximum 2 persons in a group
The student were given the two images. One of the image have a georeferenced image while
the other one of the satellite image doesn’t have a coordinate system. Your task is to perform
the geometric correction of the satellite image using the georeferenced image as reference.
The method used in performing geometric correction is called image to image registration.
