Personality

Personality, a characteristic way of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Personality embraces moods, attitudes, and
opinions and is most clearly expressed in interactions with other people.

It includes behavioral characteristics, both inherent and acquired, that distinguish one person from another and that
can be observed in people’s relations to the environment and to the social group.

Macionis define as “ It is the constant pattern of thinking , feeling and acting . ”

Ogburn and Nimkoff define it as the totality of sentiments , attitudes, idea , habits , skills and behavior of an
individual.

The term personality has been defined in many ways, but as a psychological concept two main meanings have
evolved:-

1. The first pertains to the consistent differences that exist between people: in this sense, the study of
personality focuses on classifying and explaining relatively stable human psychological characteristics.
2. The second meaning emphasizes those qualities that make all people alike and that distinguish
psychological man from other species; it directs the personality theorist to search for those regularities
among all people that define the nature of man as well as the factors that influence the course of lives.

It should be emphasized, however, that no definition of personality has found universal acceptance within the field.

The study of personality can be said to have its origins in the fundamental idea that people are distinguished by their
characteristic individual patterns of behavior —the distinctive ways in which they walk, talk, furnish their living
quarters, or express their urges. Whatever the behavior personologists (as those who systematically study
personality are called) examine how people differ in the ways they express themselves and attempt to determine
the causes of these differences.

Case study :- Extrovert Personality

Extroverts are often described as the life of the party. Their outgoing, vibrant nature draws
people to them, and they have a hard time turning away the attention. They thrive off the
interaction.
In the 1960s, psychologist Carl Jung first described introverts and extraverts when discussing
personality elements. (The term now commonly used is extroverts.) Jung argued extroverts
are energized by crowds and interaction with the external world.

As Jung discovered, being an extrovert isn’t an all or nothing option. Instead, most people
fall somewhere on a spectrum between the two polar ends. In the years since Jung’s
theories first became popular, research has discovered there are genetic and hormonal
reasons some people display more extroverted characteristics than others.

Case study:-Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly the former Captain of the Indian Cricket team is an aggressive
left-handed batsman in the middle order and also bowls right-handed military
medium pace. Numerous captains have led the nation before his stint and
plenty more will do so in the coming future. However, Sourav Ganguly has
managed to carve a unique niche for himself in the annals of Indian cricket.
With his bold leadership as well as tactful man-management skills, the stylish
left-hander instilled immense self-belief in his team mates and consequently
transformed the entire outlook of the Indian team across both Tests and ODIs.
The country's successes in the latter part of the 2000s and early stages of the
2010s are largely due to the foundation established by the 'Prince of Calcutta'.

What lessons can we draw from Prince of Calcutta?

1. Treat adversity as a platform for resurgence

If there's anything that is guaranteed in life, then it is probably failure. A
glance of almost every successful personality's career reveals the common
strand of defeat and subsequent resurgence. At a time when he could have
easily opted to retire, Ganguly chose to battle his demons and made a stirring
comeback. Having the aptitude to treat adversity as a platform for glory can
make a crucial difference to one's mindset during despondence.

2. Leadership is all about showing faith

At a time when most other captains preferred to operate within cliques for
fear of revolt, Ganguly broke stereotypes associated with subcontinental
cricket by empowering each and every member in the side. From bowlers with
keen tactical nous like Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan to shrewd batsmen
such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, the skipper tried to
create plenty more leaders within the Indian team by entrusting them with
responsibility. His decision to promote the debonair wicket-keeper batsman to
number three during the 2005 Vizag ODI against Pakistan was instrumental in
the evolution of Dhoni's career.

3. Relish the opportunity to prove a point

Instead of cowering into his shell, Ganguly confronted criticism head-on and
used the encircling situation as an opportunity to prove a point. Possessing

8
such a fighting attitude in the face of opprobrium is extremely necessary to
survive in the cut-throat environment prevalent within the contemporary work
force.

4 Don't get intimidated by menacing nemesis

In a massive country like India where there is relentless competition in every
field, the presence of tougher and more accomplished rivals can sap one's self-
belief. However, as Ganguly showed by leading his nation to a game-changing
triumph, the first step in vanquishing stronger competitors stems from denying
credence to their reputation. Even if the adversary appears to be
impenetrable, unshakable confidence on one's own ability goes a long way in
achieving seemingly unthinkable challenges.

5. Never listen to naysayers

The manner in which Ganguly won over his naysayers stands as a perfect
example in dealing with doubters. In every sphere of life, the presence of
skeptics aplenty is the common link. Instead of walking into their traps by
letting them get into our heads, it becomes imperative to channel our energies
in the proper direction. After all, there is no better way to respond to
pessimists than ignoring their cynical views and letting our work do the talking.

How successful people develop their personality

There are a core set of personality traits that are common to all successful people.

They are:-

1. A Need to Compete:-Being successful is fundamentally about needing to win; the

reasons vary, but the determination doesn't.

2. The Capacity to Let go:-Successful people are not anchored by the past. They learn
from it--fast--and move on to a bigger challenge.
3. A Passion for Improvement:-Successful people are perpetually trying to improve
themselves.
4. Obsessive Attention to Detail:- most successful people got there by doing just that
when they were the ones doing the small stuff.
5. Keeping an Inventory of Accomplishment:-Successful people keep track of their
achievements.
6. Compulsively Working their Network:-One of the most consistently common traits
of successful people is their ability to relentlessly work their network.

7. Rewarding Themselves:-When you're running at full throttle you need to take time
to take care of yourself. Emotionally and physically
8. Being Grateful:-They realized how fortunate they were to be where they were, and
weren't shy about sharing it.

10
9. Not Wavering in a Crisis:-One of the greatest determinants of success is the ability
to keep your head in a firestorm. Successful people do not lose their sense of
purpose or direction in a crisis,
10. Striving for Authenticity:- For successful people being authentic means that they
are clear in expressing their opinions and consistently truthful and transparent.

11. Taking Responsibility:-Owning the failure is a trait that not only engenders trust
but also demonstrates to others

12. Advocating for Their Customers:-Even the most hard-nosed and callous CEOs
become models of charm and deference when they are in front of their customers.

13. Discounting the Praise of Others--Successful people find that their jokes get
funnier and the number of people who agree with them rises exponentially.
14. Desire to Give Back--One of the most rewarding things about achieving any degree
of success is the opportunity to encourage and motivate others.
15. Refusing to be Defined by Their Failures--Nobody is 100% successful. Success is a
net positive outcome that always includes an abundance of failure,
experimentation, and learning
