III. PROCEDURE

TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY

A. ACTIVITY

Good morning class! Good morning ma'am!

I know that you are all fine today based on the smiles
plastered on your faces. Today, we shall have a game
entitled, “DECODE ME”.

But before that, get the emoticons I placed at the back

of your chair to identify your group. Those who got
the same emoticons, stay together. In every activity,
you must have the LMNOP (Leader, Material-
specialist, Note taker, Overseer, and Presenter). Class,
proceed now to your respective groups quietly.
(The students proceed to their groups)
Before we proceed with the activity. I want you to
meet our visitors from the Asianovela, “Meteor
Garden”.

In this activity, your task is to form a sentence by

decoding the symbols, pictures, numbers and letters
which serve as your clues. Write your answers on the
slate boards. The group who gets or raises first the
correct answer will get a point and the group who gets
the most number of points will be the winner. Are you
ready?
Yes ma'am

Now, class, let's give a hand to the winning group.

So did you enjoy our activity class? Yes ma’am

So what are the formed sentences class?

So what did you observe on the underlined words? They are used to describe ma'am.

Excellent, they are used to describe

something/someone and what do we call these
descriptive words class. Adjectives ma'am.

Very good. Now what exists between the adjectives

and the underlined words? The underlined words modify the adjective ma'am.

How do we call the tie that exists between the

adjective and the modifier? Modification ma'am.

Excellent. So based on your answers, what is our topic

for today? Structures of modification using adjectives as a head.

Precisely! Our topic for today is on the structures of

modification particularly on adjectives w/c functions
as head. Moreover, at the end of the lesson, you are
expected to define modification, identify the functions
of adjectives as head of the structures of modification
in an excerpt, construct sentences using the structures
of modification as adjective, and appreciate the use of
modification as adjectives through performing
differentiated tasks.

B. ANALYSIS

ON DEFINING MODIFICATION

Based on our activity earlier, what exists between the

adjective and its modifier? Modification ma'am.

Great! Now who can give the meaning of

modification? Modification is the grammatical tie that exists between
the adjective and its modifier ma'am.
ON IDENTIFYING THE FUNCTIONS OF
ADJECTIVES AS HEAD OF THE STRUCTURES
OF MODIFICATION

Good. So for us to know the different functions of

adjective as a head of modification let's have an
activity entitled “POP AND ANSWER”. Your task is
to identify the adjective used in the sentence from the
story, “The Voice of the Mountain” by Stephen Crane.
Then, pop out the balloon containing the adjective by
forming the jumbled letters. You must arrange the
letters as fast as you can. Remember, pop out only the
color of the balloon I will be flashing. Post your
answers on the slate boards provided. The group who
raises first the correct word gets the point. The group
who gets the highest score will be the winner.

Did I make myself clear class? Yes ma’am

D. APPLICATION

Since you already know the structures of modification

adjective as a head I think you are now ready
for our next activity. This activity is entitled
“IT'S SHOWTIME!”. This time, you will
work on the different activities to enhance
your skills and talents. I will group you
according to your ability. All you have to do
is to appreciate structures of modification adjective
as a head and its functions through performing
differentiated tasks. Proceed now to your respective groups.

Group Task
Singers Compose/Sing a song that has any of the functions of
adjectives as a head of structure of modification.
Pen Pushers Compose a poem that has any of the functions of
adjectives as a head of structure of modification.
Artists Role play a scene that uses any of the functions of
adjectives as a head of structure of modification.
Creators Create a slogan that uses any of the functions of
adjectives as a head fostering the promotion of unity.

D. ABSTRACTION

So class let’s have a review on what we have

discussed earlier using a human graphic organizer.

So what is the head of our modification? Adjective ma'am

Okay very good. What is modification? It is a grammatical tie that exist between a noun and its
adjective or between a parts of speech.

Okay good. What is our first function? Qualifiers as Adjective Modifier.

A word like very, rather, enough and etc. are qualifiers
and they modify adjectives

What about our second function? Adverb as Adjective modifier. An adverb that modifies
an adjective ends in -ly.

How about our third function? Noun as adjective modifier. In some special
expressions, noun can modify adjective.

How about the fourth function? Verb as adjective modifier. An adjective can be
modified by a verb in present participle form(-ing) that
usually precedes the adjective, or by infinitive that
follows the adjective.
And the last function? Adjective as adjective modifier. Adjective that
modifies another adjective.
IV. EVALUATION

Directions: Tell whether the functions of adjective as a head is Qualifier as an adjective modifier, Adverb as an
adjective modifier, Noun as an adjective modifier, Verb as an adjective modifier, and Adjective as adjective
modifier.

1. That girl is hopeless romantic, she never had a boyfriend since birth.
2. There's only overwhelming sensation of pain itself.
3. Lately I've become very well acquainted with pain-the ache has become nearly unbearable.
4. Sometimes if you’re lucky enough, you can confide in someone else and trust them.
5. I believe that one day he will see how truly incredible he is.
6. Scarlet at the small screen until the words turned into a screaming blur of white and black and the ground
seemed to drop out from beneath the ship.
7.The sun was shining very bright.
8. I received love letters from a mysteriously romantic guy.
9. Her story was hard to believe, and it finally was a proven to be a lie.
10. But her grandmother's stern face just as quickly infiltrated the dream.

V. ASSIGNMENT

A. Follow-up

Construct five sentences using the functions of adjectives as a head of structure of modification.

B. Advance

Have an advance reading about the structures of modifications adverb as a head.

Let's give a round of applause to the winners.

Let’s have an excerpt from the story, “ The Voice of

the Mountain” by Stephen Crane.

The little animal put his hand upon his chin and reflected. “Well, it seems you are hungry, and the
King of Everything has forbidden you to go for food in fear that your monstrous feet will riddle the
earth with holes. What you need is a pair of wings.”

“A pair of wings!” cried Popocatepetl delightedly.

“A pair of wings!” screamed the eagle in joy.
“How very simple, after all.”
“And yet how wise!”
“But,” said Popocatepetl, after the first outburst, “who can make me these wings?”

So for the first function let's take the highlighted

word.

So what is our adjective here? simple ma'am

Great! And what modifies the word simple? very ma'am

How do we call the word very? Qualifier ma'am

Exactly. So what now do you think is our first Qualifier ma'am.

function?

You have a point, so our first function is Qualifiers as

an adjective modifier. Qualifiers like very, rather,
enough and etc. modifies an adjective.

For the second function let's take this example.

He looked longingly at some island in the sea. “Ah, those flat cakes! If I had them. He stared at storm-
cloudy in the sky. “Ah, what a drink is there.” But the King of Everything, you know, had forbidden
the old man Popocatepetl to move at all, because he feared that every footprint would make a great
hole in the land. So the old fellow was obliged to sit still and wait for his food to come within reach.
Anyone who has tried this plan knows what intervals lie between meals.

So what is our adjective? Cloudy ma’am

What modifies the word cloudy? Storm ma’am

What part of speech does the word storm belong to? Noun ma’am

Very good. Storm is noun. So what is our next Noun as an adjective modifier
function?

For the next function

Who can understand the agony of a creature whose stomach is as large as a thousand churches, when
this same stomach is as empty as a broken water jar?

What is our adjective here? Large ma’am

What modifies the word large? Thousand churches ma’am

Exactly and how do we call the phrase Adjective ma’am

thousand churches?

Definitely! What now is our next function? Adjective as an adjective modifier

For the next function let’s take this example

I received love letters from a mysteriously romantic guy.

So what is our adjective here class? Romantic ma'am

What modifies the word romantic? mysteriously ma'am

And what part of speech does the word mysteriously Adverb ma'am
belongs to?

Definitely! So it is an adverb. Now what do you think Adverb as Adjective Modifier ma'am.
is our second function?

Very good. So an adverb that modifies an adjective.

Let’s move on for the last function

The thief was captivated to the woman’s blinking gold bracelet.

What is our adjective here class?

Gold ma’am
What modifies the word gold?
Blinking ma’am
Awesome! And how do we call
the word blinking? Verb ma’am

What now is our next function?

Verb as an adjective modifier

ON CONSTRUCTING SENTENCES USING

STRUCTURES OF MODIFICATION (ADJECTIVE)

This time class, construct sentences using adjectives. I

will give each group an adjective and a function and
use it in a sentence. Is that clear? Yes ma'am

GROUP NAME ADJECTIVE FUNCTION

Jolly Group loud qualifier
Amazing group famous adverb
Inspired Group asleep noun
(The students do the activity)
Fabulous Group cold verb
Wow group pale adjective
Furious Group blue adjective

Now class, present your outputs. You can now paste it (The students present their output)
