the guidance of almighty God and let us
enlighten our mind to completely
understand the lesson this morning.
Would you please lead the prayer?

Well said Carla.

Yes Marlon.
Active Voice is more formal sir.

Very good Marlon!

Ok class our topic has something to do

You are right Jane. They have this suffix

So, when we talk about those words with

How about these two words and let’s add

Ok class, so today we will focus on them,

and I will give you the main goal this day.
At the end of the lesson, you should be
able to:

1. Define Structuralism and

Formalist approach.
2. Differentiate Structuralism from
Formalist approach and
3. You will critique a literary
selection based on the following
approaches:
Structuralism/Formalism

C. Presenting

word. In literature we used the term
Literary Criticism it is when we
evaluate, analyze, describe or interpret
the specific literary work.

How about approach? Can I ask anyone to

Student search or the definition.
look for its definition in the dictionary.
“Approach is a way of dealing
with something.”
Ok thank you. So, when we say approach,
it is when we study and practice
something.

There are two literary approaches we can

use in assessing a literary piece or how
deal with any literary text we have the
Formalism approach and Structuralism
approach.

Now, let’s define what is Formalism.

Formalism is an approach that studies

text as a text. It views literature as
a unique form of human knowledge that
needs to be examined on its own
terms. In formalism approach, a literary
work can be understood only by
reference to its intrinsic features, which
are the elements.
Let’s discuss those elements one by one.
The first element is a person or even
animal who takes part in the action. This
is what we call Characters.
We have two kinds of characters.

Static- character who does not change

overtime.
Dynamic- character whose personality
changes overtime.
For example, in the story “The Lion King”

Look at the picture, what happen to the

characters from the beginning and the
ending of the story? Simba grow up while Scar never
change his features in
Very good.! throughout the story.
Next element is the setting.
Setting refers to time and place the story
takes place. This includes
weather condition and social condition.

Now, observe these two pictures. Can you

tell when each of this picture was taken?
Where do you think they were captured?
Can you tell what is going on?

The people are in the hospital,

the first picture is current and
https://impact.monash.edu/ the second is like in old setting.
https://indianexpress.com/

From your observation the first picture is

taken during this pandemic... It was
captured in a hospital. The second one is
during the Spanish flu in 1918. It was
taken in a hospital. Both shows the
situation in during a pandemic.

Let us know the third element which is

the Plot.
Plot- has something to do with the
whole sequence of the story. It shows
the beginning of the conflict, how the
character faces the conflict, and the
effect of the character’s action toward
the conflict or how the conflict is
solved.
Let’s go back to the story of “The Lion
King”. Can you tell me the beginning
of the story, what is the conflict or the
problem and how it is solved at the
end?
Simba's wicked uncle, Scar plots
to usurp Mufasa's throne by
luring father and son into a
stampede of wildebeests. But
Simba escapes, and only Mufasa
is killed. Simba returns as an
adult to take back his homeland
Another element Is the Point of View.

second or third person.
The question is Who speaks in the story?

Now you are going to watch a movie

trailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=3mMN693-F3U
What is the title of the story?
Ok before it become a movie it is a book
by Yan Martel which written in first
person point of view, it explains how he
came to hear the story we are about to Life of Pi

read from Pi himself.

Also, we have the Theme or the

central Idea of the story. It answers
the question: What is the story all
about?
What is the theme of the story Life of
Pi?

Last is Symbolism. It is any object,

person or situation, event or action It has themes of spirituality and

the quote. Ok Jessa Mae.

Thank you, Jessa Mae.

So that is Formalism, now let us I think this quote is trying to say

proceed to the second approach. that like a paint, knowledge

should be seen in our ways and
how we will apply it to our lives.
The Structuralism - is a method of
interpreting and analyzing a literary
piece that focuses on contrasting
ideas and show how they relate to the
whole structure. This approach treats
the text as linguistic construct.
In Structuralism, a piece is open to
interpretation. It depends on how
the reader views the meaning on the
text base on his /her understanding,
which may involve personal belief,
environment, behavior or moral
perception.

For example, the nursery song Jack

and Jill may be just a simple children
song about the two characters who
fetch water from a hill but using
structuralism approach, the song can
Jack and Jill went up the
be interpreted in different ways.

Jack fell down and broke

his crown,

And Jill came tumbling

after
Give me your interpretation to this
riddle.

Interpretation# 1
We should be careful in all
our actions or else we can
drag others down with us.

Interpretation# 2
Jack’s crown may
symbolize authority. So, we
can apply this to
governance. If the ruler
fails, it affects the people.

D. Discussing new
concepts and After we defined the two approaches get
your pen and paper. Tell which literary
practicing new approach is used in the statements.
skill #1.
_________1. Ivan Dmitrich has been
involved in brawls when he was young.
_________2. During 1800, merchants used
to travel to distant places for trade.
_________3. The story tells about how God
gives justice to the oppressed.
_________4. Justice is about harmony,
revenge is making oneself feel better,
but for some people they are just the
same.
_________5. Ivan’s 25 years of
imprisonment is not a wasted time of his
life because his faith made him a better
person even in the worst place on earth.

Let’s always remember that Formalism

analyses the structure of a text without
focusing on the external factors such as
authorship, social and cultural influence.
However, structuralism connects the
work of a particular author with works of
similar structures whereas formalism
only analyses one work at a time.

E. Discussing new
concept and We already know what Structuralism and
practicing new Formalism approach is and to apply this I
skills #2 will group you into three. All groups will
focus on the story “God Sees The Truth
But Waits” a short story by a Russian
writer Leo Tolstoy.

Group 1: Read and analyze the excerpt

Group 3: Read the story. Critique the

story and fill in the boxes with
your ideas.

F. Developing

Please recall all the lessons of module 1.

Fill in the blanks the following are the
things I learned about the lesson:

G. Finding practical
application of
concept and skills Interpret a bible verse and relate it to
in daily living. yourself.

Hosea 12: 6
“But you must return to your God;
maintain love and justice and wait for God
always.”

H. Making
generalizations What have you learned today? We learned about the
and abstractions Structuralism and Formalist
about the lesson approach.

What are the elements of Formalism? Characters, Setting, Plot, Point of

View, Theme and Symbolism.

Structuralism and formalism are two

literary theories or literary criticisms
that focus on the structure of a particular
text.
Formalism is like a painting with formal
elements such as color, line, and
composition over and above subject
matter while structuralism is like a
phone, without a speaker, the phone
would not have all of the smartphone's
expected features as people cannot
communicate with one another on the
phone without a speaker.
