One’s attempt to understand a piece of


literature demands critical ability to critique in
vast perspectives. Indeed, it is a skill that 21st
century learners need to develop. In addition,
the process of reading the texts requires
rigorous and careful lenses in order to
understand how the masterpieces of the world
in forms of literature came to existence. In
today’s time, it is easy to read without
comprehension. But in order to get the essence
of any literary pieces, one must develop a keen
sense of looking into how they are created and
what influences further shaped these literary
works.

To write your analysis on a text using the


historical lens, you must keep in mind the
following:

Historical approach is about discussing the

“Dead Stars” was the stepping stone of Modern
Philippine Writing in English. English during the
time it was written was still fresh in the country.
Writers in those days were struggling with the
new language but Paz Marquez-Benitez
showcases in “Dead Stars” not only a love story
but also reflects on the period of time the story
was written. It shows about the language, the
norms, and the way people had thought during
that time. It helps readers, not only Filipinos,
understand the concept of courtship, marriage,
and loyalty/fidelity through the eyes of the
people back in the early 20th Century in
Philippines. It shows the differences and
similarities of the past and present. Something
currently existing in our society versus
something that is currently fading in our society.
“Dead Stars” also portrays about Paz’ criticism
towards the American Imperialism. The
characters of the story were allegories to
American Imperialism, as it shows that the
traditions of the Filipinos were fading because
of the influence of the Americans in our
country.

Dead Stars is a short story of an over thirty years old bachelor, Alfredo Salazar who was
about to get married to his fiancée, Esperanza. His love and passion for his fiancé started
getting fade as he was attracted to another woman named Julia Salas. As Alfredo knew that
his family will disapprove his desire of having another woman, he unwantedly married with
Esperanza and started his own family. Later, after eight years, Alfredo went on a business
trip to Julia’s place. In his visit to Julia, to his surprise, he recognized that he no more feel
attracted to her anymore. He compared his love for her as dead stars, his memory of a
long way to get a girl he thought he loved.
