METHODOLOGY FOR EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION

The detail methodology for embankment work to be executed by us are as follows:

1. Alignment :-

On the basis of co-ordinate furnished by the Engineer and from interpolation at every 10m from the
given coordinates, the alignment of the road from Km 180.144 towards Km 140 will be marked.
Thereafter it shall be checked and approved by the Engineer.

2. Initial Levels :-

The initial levels @ 20 m C/L in longitudinal direction and 5 m C/L in cross section shall be recorded
along with the Engineer. The level shall also be recorded at every important point in cross sectional
direction.

3. Clearing and Grubbing:-

After taking the initial levels, the clearing and grubbing as per item 1.01 of Bill no.1 shall be undertaken
in accordance with clause 201 of M.O.S.T. The machinery deployed for this purpose will be dozer. Any
roots of stumps falling within this area will be removed. All excavated material grass etc., will be
disposed of within the specified lead at a location decided by the Engineer.

4. OGL Preparation

After clearing and grubbing the surface will be thoroughly graded and compacted with the Motor Grader
and vibratory roller. The O.G.L field density and level shall be recorded jointly with consultant for the
purpose of plotting the cross section for quantity purpose.

5 Embankment Construction

After OGL Preparation, item 2.02, 2.04, 2.07 of Bill no:2 shall be executed in accordance with clause
301.3.1, 3.2, 3.3.

The toe line shall be fixed by marker pegs at every 20 m interval. Approved materials from borrow area
or from road side excavation or from excavated material of structure, will be brought where embankment
is to be built. The material from tippers will be laid on the prepared surface (this item will only start after
clearing/grubbing is complete). Spreading will be done by means of grader or other approved mechanical
means. Thickness of the compacted layer will not be more than 20 cm. Moisture content at site shall be
checked by means of rapid moisture meter and deficiency in moisture content will be made good either
at the borrow area or after spreading. If it is done after spreading, it will be mixed by means of disc
harrows pulled by tractors. After attaining O.M.C. the vibratory rollers shall be used for compaction.

After completing item 2.02, 2.04, 2.07 of Bill no: 2, the surface shall be compacted as required in
accordance with clause 305.3.4. The embankment shall continued to be executed in accordance with
clause 305.3.5 of M.O.S.T. till sub-grade level is achieved.

6 Earth Work over the existing road surface

If the existing road surface is of bituminous type and lies more than 500 mm below formation level, the
same shall be scarified to a depth of 50 mm below the under side of the bitumen. Where the existing
road surface is less than 500 mm below formation level, total thickness shall be scarified up to the in
underside of the lowest bituminous layer. After scarification and removal of bituminous surfacing
material, existing pavement shall be lightly sprinkled with water and adequately compacted.

7 Sub grade
The procedure is same as for Embankment except of compaction. In this case, more number of passes of
vibratory roller will be given to achieve required field density. The final layer will be checked by taking
levels and rectification if any will be done.
