16. A rectangular field is to be enclosed with a fence. We have 500 feet of fencing material and a building
is on one side of the field and so won’t need any fencing. Determine the dimensions of the field that will
enclose the largest area.
17. A box will be constructed with a square base using 10 sq. m. of material. Assuming that all the material is
used in the construction process, determine the maximum volume that the box can have.
18. A manufacturer needs to make a cylindrical can that will hold 1.5 liters of liquid. Determine the
dimensions of the can that will minimize the amount of material used in its construction.
19. Air is being pumped into a spherical balloon at a rate of 5 cu. cm per minute. Determine the rate at
which the radius of the balloon is increasing when the diameter of the balloon is 20 cm.
20. A 15 feet ladder is resting against the wall. The bottom is initially 10 feet away and is being pushed
towards the wall at a rate of ¼ ft. per sec. How fast is the top of the ladder moving up the wall 12
seconds after start pushing?
