Pedagogy
The basic concept of this app is that Plum is an
alien that is curious about Earth. Plum is learning
about Earth through the help of kids that take
pictures of the natural things around them to teach
Plum. Plum’s photo hunt allows the student to use
their parents phone to take pictures.
After learning about different life systems and how
to classify objects according to many different
classifications the teacher will assign a mission in
the app. For this SOL I would assign the mission to
take pictures of all the different leaves they can
find while on a walk with a parent. Once the
student has taken pictures of the different kinds of
leaves, they can then choose to classify them by
color, size, or shape. Photos then can be sent to
Plum’s landing for the teacher to see. The teacher
can then pull up pictures for the whole class to see
and start a discussion about other ways the leaves
can be classified. Plum does not publish any
pictures on Plum landing if there are faces or
For this lesson the teacher will divide the class into
groups of 3 and assign a google doc to each group.
All groups will be using water as their example.
One student in each group, Student A, will be
contributing information about water as a solid to
include how it is measured, how it is changed from
their current state of being solid into the other
states of liquid and a gas and what it is called, and
an example of it being used in daily life. Student B
will represent liquid and Student C will represent
gas and each will contribute the same information
with their assigned state (solid, liquid, or gas) to
the good doc. They can work on their assignment
during class at their own desks on their
Chromebook or can work on it from home if they
don’t finish. The teacher can log into the google doc
of each group and check on their progress as well
as view the final edit.
