5 Water Sample Analysis (TSS and SSC)

There were 920 water samples collected at 5 locations (Figure 1) and analyzed at M/s Choksi
Laboratories Ltd, 6/3, Manorama Ganj, Indore (M.P) for Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Suspended
Sediment Concentration (SSC), particle grain size (D 90, D50 and D10).
The standard operation procedure for total suspended solids (TSS) ALFA-2540-D is used in analysis
(DELFINO, J.J. 1977). The Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) was analyzed using ASTM
Method D3977-97 Test Method (ASTM, 2006)
The time series plots of total suspended solids (TSS), suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is
depicted in Figure 16. The TSS are ranged between 30 and 2468 mg/l (average: 651 mg/l) and SSC
between 62 and 3103 mg/l (average: 1190 mg/l). The TSS and SSC values gradually reduce as the SW
monsoon season recedes and the river water become cleaner with a decrease in flow velocity.
The time series plot of particle grain size (D90, D50 and D10) is presented in Figure 17. The particle grain
size (D10) ranged between 0.67 - 1.86 µm (average of 1.07 µm), (D50) ranged between 1.26 - 15.9 µm
(average of 8.02 µm), (D90) ranged between 8.09 - 92.2 µm (average of 39.0 µm).

7. CONCLUSIONS
The consolidate final report contains summarized survey data reports of
A. Mineralogy of river sediment sample
B. Sediment Grain Size
C. Water level near intake
D. Current speed and direction
E. Water quality analysis (TSS, SSC and its sediment particle size (D 90, D50 and D10)

The mineralogy of river sediment analysis by X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the sediment
consists mainly of quartz with minor amount of plagioclase feldspar, muscovite, illite, calcite and
dolomite. Chlorite and K-feldspar are present in trace amounts.
The sediment grain size data reveals that except in September 2018, sediments are mainly silt and clay
(> 50%). However, during September, it is mainly sandy.
The TSS are ranged between 30 and 2468 mg/l (average: 651 mg/l) and SSC between 62 and 3103
mg/l (average: 1190 mg/l). The TSS and SSC values gradually reduce as the SW monsoon season
recedes and the river water becomes cleaner with a decrease in flow velocity.
The particle grain size (D10) ranged between 0.67 - 1.86 µm (average of 1.07 µm), (D50) ranged
between 1.26 - 15.9 µm (average of 8.02 µm), (D90) ranged between 8.09 - 92.2 µm (average of 39.0
µm).
The particle grain diameter is mainly of silt (68 %), followed by clay (25 %) and sand (7 %).
The current flow is downstream throughout the observation period with maximum current velocity of 2.4
m/s on 3rd August, 2018.
The maximum water level recorded was 28.57 m from the river bed, on 16 September, 2018.
