Geotechnical work near you


Upcoming daytime geotechnical boring
Starting as early as Thursday, Nov. 14, Sound
Transit plans to begin drilling to collect soil
samples for analysis near the intersection of 39th
Ave SE and SW Genesee St (see map at bottom
right). Sound Transit is in the early planning phase
for the West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions
project. This work, along with other investigations
throughout the project corridor, is necessary to
plan and design possible light rail alignments to be
studied in the Draft Environmental Impact
Statement (see reverse side for project map).
What to expect
Work will occur from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Example of drilling equipment
Monday – Friday, and take approximately three
to five days to complete.
Parking along the west side of 39th Ave SW N
near the SW Genesee St intersection will be
restricted. “No parking” signs will be placed at
least 72 hours prior to work starting.
Flaggers will be present to direct traffic and
pedestrians around the work area.
Drilling equipment will sound similar to a truck
engine running, with occasional hammering.
The boring will be about 4-12 inches in diameter
and will be filled and patched when work is
complete.

The West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions project is part of the voter-approved Sound Transit 3 Plan (ST3) to
expand the regional mass transit system. When complete in 2030 (West Seattle) and 2035 (Ballard), these
extensions will provide fast, reliable light rail connections to dense residential and job centers throughout the region.
