AIMS:

1. to talk about buildings


2. to develop the pupils’ listening and reading skills
3. to talk about locations in town
4. to give directions and practice prepositions of place
5. to develop the pupils’ speaking and writing skills
Warm- up and Lead in

Play the song “A wonderful time” from the previous lesson, encouraging the
pupils to sing along. Ask the pupils “Where do the animals in the song live?” their
answer would be “in the ocean”. Ask them “where do people live?” They could
answer “In a town/village”. Announce the title of the new lesson and explain what
they are going to learn about in it.

PRESENTATION AND PRACTISE

ACTIVITY 1

AIM: to talk about buildings and places

PROCEDURE: Put the pictures of the buildings and places on the board and point
to the places (town, bank, butcher’s, supermarket, etc.) one at a time, and say the
words. The pupils listen and repeat chorally and/or individually. Point to the
places/ buildings in random order and ask individual pupils to say the words.

ACTIVITY 2

AIM: to develop the pupils’ listening and reading skills

PROCEDURE: Read the instructions and go through the skills pictures of the
dialogue and set the scene by asking questions: “Who’s with Mona and Emma in
picture one? Pupils: Mona’s grandma. Write on the board: “There’s a new
…here!”

Ask the pupils to listen to the dialogue and complete the sentences. Play the
recording, the pupils listen and follow along and complete the task.

ACTIVITY 3

AIM: to talk about locations in town

PROCEDURE: The pupils look at the pictures and see which of the places (1-6)
from exercise 2, page 24 are mentioned in the text. Allow pupils time to read and
complete the task in their notebooks. They complete the other places from the
board.

ACTIVITY 4

AIM: to give directions and practice prepositions of place

PROCEDURE: Put the pencil next to the book, show it to the class and ask: “Where
is the pencil?” Pupils: “It’s next to the book.” Write the sentence on the board and
underline the words next to. The pupils repeat after you. Follow the same
procedure and present the prepositions opposite, between, on the left, on the
right. Check what pupils have understood by putting some questions.

“Where is the pencil-case? It’s between the books.”

ACTIVITY 5

AIM: to practice the pupils’ writing and speaking skills

PROCEDURE: Ask the pupils to match the words to the pictures from exercise 2 in
their worksheets and read them with loud voice. Then they read the sentences
from exercise 5 and write the locations on the map. Check their work and
evaluate what they have understood by putting questions about locations on the
map. If time permitted, they come to the board and write the sentences and
copy them in their notebooks.

At the end of the lesson praise the pupils’ involvement in the lesson and give
them homework from their book, exercise 3/ page 25.
