It’s Not Your Daddy’s Closet
Today, closet and home organization professionals are involved in
much more than bedroom closets. Their jobs are increasingly more
complex and move into all rooms of a home, including the garage.
One area showing significant growth is the home office. Accord-
ing to GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com data, regular work-at-home
among the non-self-employed population, has grown by 103 per-
cent since 2005 and 6.5 percent in 2014. Approximately 3.7 million
employees (2.5 percent of the workforce) now work from home at
least half the time.
Millennials entering the workforce are a significant part of this
trend, as well as baby boomers staying in the workplace longer and
choosing to work from home. Home organization professionals
are answering the need for home offices and multiple use rooms
with flexible desking and storage solutions like Murphy beds and
workstations.
Garages are also demanding the attention of the home organi-
zation professional. The garage, often stated as the biggest room in
the house, adds extra square footage for workshops, man caves and
entertaining.
At Woodworking Network we are excited about the future of the
home organization market. We are so bullish about the market that
we have relaunched Closets magazine in print and digital.

T
he closet industry is seeing real
growth for the first time in a
long time, with many designers
and manufacturers reporting
a spurt of new projects and improved
business conditions.
Research also suggests homeowners
view closet remodeling as a way to not
only improve home values, but also to
provide a significant return on invest-
ments.
Various closet options are available,
from floor-mounted organizing systems
to wall-hung units. Another option of-
fered by Duluth, Minnesota-based Real
Closet Inc. is a patented hybrid of sorts
that the company says can revolution-
ize the industry, providing the support,
flexibility and all wood furniture-look of
floor mounted systems with the perks of
a floating, wall-mounted system, namely
not having to deal with base moulding
and uneven floors.
Owner and inventor Brian Billman
founded Real Closet Inc. in 2009
during the depths of a recession, and
the business has flourished over the
years. Currently, the company has six
employees that work at the10,000-
square-foot plant, plus 29 field reps and
400 dealers in North America as well
as in the Grand Cayman Islands and
Puerto Rico.
Billman started out as a cabinetmaker
and then later became a dealer for the
Minnesota-based Dura Supreme kitchen
cabinet line. But as the demand for clos-
ets increased and the kitchen and bath
industry evolved to a more custom look,
Billman says he saw an opportunity to
provide a new and affordable option in
modular closet organizing systems.

Real Closet Continued...
According to Billman, “very few com-
panies in the closet industry manufac-
ture their systems to look like traditional
cabinetry, instead most look like case-
work,” he says, “by adding wider maple
edge it looks like a face frame.”
And the cabinet industry has an
entirely different mindset, he adds.
“They don’t think of closets as modular
and build on-site systems, but as open
finished cabinet boxes with closet rods
that are added on site, which increases
the price point.”
The difference with Real Closet is that
it is an all-wood, modular, flat-packed
system that is also affordable.
“My main goal when developing this
product was to create an affordable clos-
et that looked more like custom cabine-
try,” Billman says.
The patented Wall Support Shelf
system consists of two grooved solid
maple, UV-finished foundation rails
that are virtually invisible when above
and below the partitions, he says. The
modular closet unit mounts between the
rails, which are properly aligned with
provided spacers. Partitions have zinc
coated pound-able fasteners (which
are pressed into pre-drilled holes on
the top, bottom and back edges of all
partitions) with extended tabs that tilt
into the grooved rails, making it almost
zero clearance when in the upright
position, Billman notes. These partitions
are 23- and 47-inches tall, while the pat-
ented Upright Extender System makes
the partitions expandable to 70- and
93-inches tall.
The Real Closet system, which comes
in three colors – white, spice and java
– also has a 3/4-inch plywood shelf in
18-, 24-, and 30-inch standard widths,
plus the patented wider span Twin Beam
shelving available in 18-, 24-, 30-, 35-,
47-, and 59-inch widths. All shelf edges
are solid maple with a UV finish. Draw-
ers are made of dovetailed solid birch Inventor Brian Billman says he developed the Real Closet system to offer an
affordable organizing solution that looks like custom cabinetry.
with profiled solid maple drawer fronts.

Manufacturing Process
The equipment used by Real Closet to
build the systems includes a Giben beam
saw, Biesse edgebander, Busellato CNC
routers, shapers, a Ritter sander, and
clamping and drilling stations engi-
neered and constructed specifically for
Real Closet.
Billman says he decided to have
the customized clamping and drilling
stations built as a result of the specific
needs of the all-wood, wall-mounted
system.
“The typical closet is made out of
particleboard. Component parts are cut
on a computerized CNC to finished siz-
es first and then edgebanded,” Billman
says. “Our product has wood mouldings
— a furniture-shaped edge — so the man-
ufacturing process is much different.
“First the plywood is ripped on a
beam saw and then machined on the
front and back edges to receive two
1-1/2-inch solid maple edges that then
have a UV-finish applied and clamped
through a special gluing process that
allows it to be clamped at 8 feet per
minute. Once the twin beam shelves are
at this point they are then cut to finished
sizes,” he explains.
Real Closet dealers use 2020 Design
or Pro Kitchen to design the patented
wall-mounted organizing system.
“Designers use kitchen software all
day,” Billman says. “This is why the
Real Closet towers can drag-and-drop
just like kitchen cabinets do to shorten
the learning curve. Instead of using the
closet versions that software companies
offer, we created a catalog designed for
the kitchen version of software with
kitchen designers in mind.”
Billman adds that they are looking to
add even more dealers to the compa-
ny’s network, such as kitchen and bath
studios, home interior designers, home
centers, and even lumberyards.

An Inconvenient and Forgotten

New Home Upgrade
How to have home builders give buyers what they want: more storage.

Home builders rarely ask buyers about their storage needs.

system they want and need now because they’re
having to remodel a new home to get it.
“Plus this all takes time, during which your
clothes and belongings are in boxes or strewn
across the furniture. I’d be pretty mad about that,
too. Especially when it could have easily been
avoided by installing it during construction.
“The second reason they’ll be upset – and this
can be even more frustrating for buyers – is to
find out after they’ve moved in that the builder
does offer the option to upgrade closets and stor-
age, but no one told them about it,” Ferraro states
incredulously. “For whatever reason, the sales
or design center representative failed to even
bring up the subject, and it really does happen
more than you would believe. Now, not only are
they tearing their house up and spending more
money, they’re doing it with the knowledge that it
could have all been avoided – and that puts a big
chip on their shoulder about their home builder.”
Here in Las Vegas, Ferraro has been custom de-
signing closet and garage storage systems for the
past 15 years, working with many of the largest
new home builders in town.
“Studies continue to prove that more and better
storage is consistently among the top five things
that buyers look for in a home,” he says. “Smart
builders encourage their buyers to think about
upgrading their storage areas during construc-
tion. And when they do, homeowners will call
us to say how much they love their closets. We
always pass that along to the builder, so they’ll
continue to recognize the value they’re offering
their customers.”
Giving buyers what they want. It’s not a strange
concept, but it is strangely inconsistent among
home builders, Ferraro notes.
“We explain it to our home builder clients like
this,” Ferraro says. “Compare today’s new homes
to the homes of 1980. Everything has joined the
21st century: Kitchens are open and light with
cabinet, countertop, fixtures, appliances and
lighting upgrades available; the number of floor-
ing options are astounding; smart home systems
for home theaters and digital devices didn’t even
exist back then. But if the homes you build today
are still using the same wood shelf and pole from
1980, then you’re ignoring what buyers want and Joe Ferraro, Closets Las Vegas owner, explains the importance of educat-

How Glideware Reinvented Organization

and Storage
Dave and Jenny Hall took a
storage dilemma and turned it into an
entrepreneurial opportunity by creating
Glideware vertical storage.
It started with a sketch on a napkin
— like so many innovations do. In fact,
it really began with the receipt of new
cookware, which in turn, begged the
question, “How the heck am I to store
this stuff and keep its non-stick surface
fresh and undamaged?”
For Dave and Jenny, it was this gift,
and the ensuing storage dilemma that
led them down the uncharted waters of
entrepreneurship.
A true family affair, Dave and Jenny
have involved their two children in
many decisions from the get-go. It was
with their encouragement that the Halls
utilized Kickstarter to get going and test
the waters.
“Immediately after the Kickstarter
campaign ended, we sold almost 10
units through our site the first week. We
weren’t even sure how we were going to
fulfill the orders, but we knew we had
something,” Jenny says.
The Kickstarter campaign managed
to raise $34,000 against their goal of
$30,000. They were officially in business
and started thinking about next steps.
“We started to think about how to get
exposure. As we learned about who and
where we might best sell and promote,
we discovered the National Kitchen &
Bath Association,” she explains.
A phone call connected them to Donna
Baldino, who was their NKBA repre-
sentative. Baldino made a trip to see the
product and meet the Halls.

The full-day wood Finishing Conference will
be presented by well-known finishing expert Phil
Stevenson, and includes five sessions covering
finishing room design, sanding, spray booth
layout, and finishing profitability.

Plant Tour at K&Z Cabinets

For the past two years, plant tours have high-
lighted the event. Sponsored this year by Stiles
Machinery, the March 22 plant tour will visit
K&Z Cabinets, one of southern California’s larg-
est casework manufacturers. The tour is open to
registered Cabinets and Closet track conference
attendees.
Just before the Expo, visitors will have a chance
to hear another side of Lisa Adams, closet design-
er for stars like Eddie Murphy and Billy Crystal,
in a March 23 keynote at 9:00 a.m. Attendance
is expected to be strong when the floor opens at
10:00 a.m., drawing from more than 1,000 closet
professionals across the state of California.
When the show opens March 23, visitors will
find the latest in panel and hardware, machinery
and software for both design and business. Cab-
inets & Closets Expo is the first event devoted
to interior remodeling following KBIS 2016.
Attendees will see truly innovative colors and
textures in panel and wood components, as well
as hardware innovations that have just entered
the market.
With the recovery, closet-makers and cabi-
netmakers are reexamining their approach to
production. For this reason, among more than 80
exhibitors at the show are seven CNC manufac-
turers: Biesse America, Felder Group, Holz-Her,
Laguna Tools, SNX Technologies, Stiles Machin-
ery, and Thermwood.
Along with those companies, there are also two
vertical panel saw manufacturers exhibiting:
Putsch Inc. and Colonial Saw. Other machinery
exhibitors include Castle (joining machinery),
Schmalz (material handling), and Timesavers
(sanders).
Software to control the machinery, and for de-
signing closets and cabinets, will also be on view
at Delcam ArtCAM, Cabinet Vision, Microvel-

I’m Denise Butchko and I’m a

Or I’m a recovering non tweeter.
Why is that?
It’s not because I’ve got so much time

And the fact that they need each other

and accurate production of orders.
Currently, 90 to 95 percent of the orders are
generated in 2020 Design with the remaining ones,
which are CAD orders, entered directly into Insight
for production management. The company adds
that before implementing the software system,
about 35 percent of the orders input by distributors
had design problems. Now, distributors are auto-
matically notified to adjust the design. Also, Oppein
notes, manpower requirements have been reduced
by 2.5 in the ordering cycle.
The production cycle also has been reduced by 35
percent and capabilities improved since the end-to-
end software solution system was implemented. In
addition to streamlining the entire process, the pro-
duction status is delivered to stores and consumers
in real-time, improving the experience.
Oppein’s wardrobe business in particular saw
improved efficiency in tracking data from all
segments. To track the circulation of parts in the
production process, scanning functions have been
added to the system. Now barcodes are attached to
all boards that can be scanned upon arriving at each
segment. Real-time updating of dynamic reports
also provides management with data that allows
it to see all kinds of information in the order-pro-
cessing queue during important stages of the order
processing cycle.
The system also can promptly identify order back-
logs, the duration that orders stay in the system,
daily payments received, daily sales order volume,
daily sales order statistics, and other key perfor-
mance indices that greatly improve decision making
and allow management to accurately understand
where and when to allocate resources.
“The demand in the Asian market for high-qual-
