(6pts)Problem 1: a) Name main questions that the 2nd law answers about all types of processes and equipment.
1.POSSIBILITY 2. DIRECTION 3. EFFICIENCY 4. FEASIBILITY
b) LIST at least 3 Moves/Modifications to improve the efficiency of a power/refrigeration cycles
1.Regeneration2.Reheating 3. Intercooling 4.multistaging 5.cascding
Problem 2: For a power plant the power output 600 Mega Watt and the thermal efficiency is (40%) of are
given. Find the rate of heat rejection Assumptions 1 The plant operates steadily. 2 Heat losses from the working
fluid at the pipes and other components are negligible. the maximum pressure is P1.

Efficiency=1-Ql/QH 0.4=1- Ql/600 QL= 360 MW

Problem 3: An ideal Otto cycle is considered. FIND The thermal efficiency and the rate of heat input
.Assumptions 1 The air-standard assumptions are applicable. 2 Kinetic and potential energy changes are
negligible. 3 Air is an ideal gas with constant specific heats Properties The properties of air at room temperature are cp =
1.005 kJ/kg.K, cv = 0.718 kJ/kg·K, and k = 1.4 (Table A-2a).
Problem 4:
Refrigerant-134a is the working fluid in an ideal compression refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant leaves the evaporator at
-20oC and has a condenser pressure of 0.9 MPa. The mass flow rate is 3 kg/min. Find COPR and COPR, Carnot for the same
Tmax and Tmin , and the tons of refrigeration.

Example 11-1
Refrigerant-134a is the working fluid in an ideal compression refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant leaves the evaporator at
-20oC and has a condenser pressure of 0.9 MPa. The mass flow rate is 3 kg/min. Find COPR and COPR, Carnot for the same
Tmax and Tmin , and the tons of refrigeration.
Using the Refrigerant-134a Tables, we have
Problem 5: Shown the carnot cycle first to the left (a) and other cycles to its right, arrange the cycle in terms of
efficiency (no calculations) just by looking at the drawing AND explain your answer!
Solution:
Maximizing Area under the curve T-s means maximizing power output

Efficiency High to low: c) then d) then c) then a)

b) c) d)
