Mid-Autumn Festival at New Horizons

What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?

Also known as the Moon Festival and Harvest Moon Festival, the ritual is celebrated
mainly in Chinese and Vietnamese communities. While it has no fixed date on the
calendar, it traditionally falls on the 15th day of the eighth month – a full moon day.
This year, celebrations start on 24 September.

When did we celebrate?

As New Horizons family, we preferred to celebrate from 5th of September to 11th of

September in order to reach all of our students to involve our activities and give them
opportunity to learn while having fun. It was an amazing, educational week of festival
with full of laugh, dance and delicious moon cakes.

How did we celebrate?

It can be a festival but nobody wasn’t allowed to learn English! How? After a long
preparation time, our experienced team came up with some activities for all age
groups, which includes learning process and fun. Basically, our schedule was like
below;

1- Greeting & Ice Breaker - Waka-waka song and dance/ questions related to
Mid-Autumn in order to check their background information
2- Vocabulary Teaching & Games – Words related to Mid-Autumn Festival &
Group work to study & Games to check their knowledge of these words.
3- Mid-Autumn Song – Singing Mid-Autumn Song to provide fluency for students.
4- Short Movie- A short movie related to festival in order to expand their Listening
Skills and follow-up questions to check their knowledge.
5- Arts Crafts – Animal Hat, Lantern, Animal mask making with students in order
to have fun and expand motor skills especially young learners.
6- Snack Time – Eating moon cake and snacks while reviewing the day and
taking some photos for memory.

Why the festival was important?

We know that each kid can learn English somehow, somewhere. However, feeling
safe while speaking English and having a family atmosphere are not easy to achieve.
From each age group, our students, our loved ones could succeed, have fun and the
most importantly work together in the name of learning English and preserving their
culture at the same time. That’s why our festival had a bigger meaning with the motto
of ‘’learn& practice& have fun & share’’.
Notes from our teachers

Ms Hoa-

Mrs. Maria-

Mr. John- It was an amazing experience to share those moments with our lovely
students. I understood one more time that how lucky we are to have these respectful
kids who want to enjoy their culture while trying to become citizen of the world. All of
them tried their best and had fun which is a satisfying occasion as a teacher for me.
Just like in our classes, we are aware of how important is their time and this cannot
be wasted by anyone so I want to thank our parents as well to trust us. As New
Horizons family, we will achieve more and more!
