ISOLATE, LOCK and TAG

fuel supply at main point.

DISCONNECT the spark


plug wire (1) from the
3.0 ignition coil and remove the
spark plug adapter (2).

REMOVE all valve covers,


using a 3/8” ratchet with a
13mm socket.

4.0 NOTE: You will repeat this


per all 8 cylinder heads.

NOTE: Good rule of thumb


is to mark each valve
cover per cylinder.

REMOVE the 3 ½”
5.0 extension tubes before you
REMOVE the spark plugs.

REMOVE the spark plugs


USING a 3/8” ratchet and a
5/8” spark plug socket.

TURNING counter clockwise


remove spark plug.

REPEAT this process for all
8 cylinders.

INSPECT spark plugs for


sign of stress, oil, water.

REMOVE the rocker arms


assembly, using a 3/8”
ratchet with a 17mm socket.

Rule of thumb is to mark the


rocker arms per cylinder
head.

INSPECT the gasket area


for surface quality, if needed
clean the gasket area with a

paint scrapper to ensure a
smooth surface and proper
readings.

9.0 There are two different Valve Recession Readings, (Left Valve Stem = Exhaust) and (Right Valve Stem =
Intake).

First, you will need


to ZERO out the
depth gauge, in
order to ZERO out
10.0 the depth gauge
you will need to do
this on a flat level
surface such as
the frame of the
unit, as shown in
the photo.

USE the 1”
extension on the
depth gauge while
taking

measurements, but
DO NOT USE the
1” extension to
ZERO out the
depth gauge.

USING the depth gauge


begin recording your
measurements,
RECORD the
12.0
measurements into the
data spreadsheet, to
VALIDATE that the
Valve Stems are within
the set limits. ADD 1” to
your measurement for
the total measurement.

EXAMPLE: Depth
Gauge = 0.395

1 + .395 = 1.395

This would be the


number to input in the
data sheet.

13.0 REPEAT the process per the 7 cylinders which remain to get the readings for the Valve Recession.

14.0 Once the Valve Recession measurements have been taken, you will need to reassemble the unit.

REPLACE all
rocker arm
assemblies
and TORQUE
the housing
bolts to 47
ft/lbs.
15.0 ENSURE that
the rocker
arms seat
correctly with
the push rods
and everything
is in place.

NOTE: Any
improper
seating of
these
components
can slip and
cause serious
damage to the
unit.

Now you are ready to begin


your Valve Lash Setting, you
can do this by PLACING

your engine in the correct
position.

IDENTIFY the TDC marking


on the flywheel.

ROTATE your engine by

CHECK cylinders 1 & 6 to


determine where you are at.
If you are on 6, ROTATE the
18.0 engine to your marking
again, now you should be on
the cylinder 1 and can begin
Valve Lash according to the
Valve Lash Procedure.

NOTE: FOLLOW the white


arrows in the sequence for
Valve Lash Setting in this
first VS position.

USING your filler gauges


.016 for exhaust and .012 for
the intake set your Valve
Lash USING a flat head
19.0 screwdriver on the adjusting
screw. Your Lash should be
snug but still able to slide in
back and forth.

LOCK in your Valve Lash


20.0 Setting using a combo
wrench to TIGHTEN the
locking nut on your adjusting
screw. USE the flat head to
keep your adjusting screw in
place while you LOCK down
the nut. ADJUST valves
according to the first
sequence in the procedure,
ROTATE engine 360° back
to your TDC marking you
should now be on cylinder 6.

NOTE: FOLLOW the black


arrows in the sequence for
Valve Lash Setting in this
second VS position.
