• As per American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), there are some divisions related to
transportation engineering:
• Highway Engineering
Highway engineering is an engineering discipline which involves the design, construction and
maintenance of Highway Roads & Systems, urban streets as well as parking facilities.
• Railway Engineering
It is a branch of civil engineering concerned with the design, construction, maintenance, and
operation of railways. Railway engineering includes elements of civil, mechanical, industrial, and
electrical engineering.
Port and harbor engineers handle the design, construction, and operation of ports, harbors,
canals, and other maritime facilities.
• Airport Engineering
Airport Engineering encompasses the planning, design, and construction of terminals, runways,
and navigation aids to provide for passenger and freight service.
• Pipeline Engineering
Pipeline engineering embraces the design and construction of pipelines, pumping stations, and
storage facilities. Pipelines are used to transport liquids such as water, gas, and petroleum
products over great distances. Also, products such as pulverized coal and iron ore can be
transported in a water slurry.
TRANSPORT PLANNING
• Transport planning is the process of regulating and controlling the provision of transport to
facilitate the efficient operation of the economic, social and political life of the country at the
lowest social cost.
PLANNING PROCESS
The primary aim of transport planning is the identification and evaluation of the future transport
needs.
a. Trip generation
o The first stage of model building process is that of trip generation. Trips are
made for a variety of purposes and for various land uses. For convenience,
trips are often split into two groups:
- (i) Home-based trips:
- Such trips have one trip end at the home of the person
making the trip, which may be either the origin or
destination of the given trip.
- (ii) Non-home-based trips:
- This initial part of the transport model expresses trip-
making relationships in a mathematical form so that
ultimately we can calculate the total number of trips-ends
originating from the defined survey zones.

EVALUATION
The evaluation stage is probably the most important of all, yet has received only limited research
attention. An economic evaluation of transport proposals is necessary because vehicle-km and road
space are commodities, which are not directly bought and sold.
TRANPORT POLICY
Nowadays every country is particular regarding the planned development of transport system, thus
formulate their own transport policy, which depends upon their needs and resources. The nature of
transport policy varies with time and space. In formulating transport policy, one should take into
consideration the ‘coordination’ and ‘competition’.
