Subject: Science Grade Level: 1st grade Time Estimate: 45min

Unit: Week 13 Topic: Forms of Energy

Goal(s): TLW understand the different forms of energy around the world.
Objective(s): TLW be able to categorize light, sound, and heat energy with minimal support.

TEKS:
1.6A – The student is expected to: identify and discuss how different forms of energy such as
light, thermal, and sound are important to everyday life.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
Three poster boards
Science notebooks

Instructional Procedures

Focusing Event:
Ask students to get out their science journals and turn to their forms of energy foldable. Go
around the room and ask students to list some of their extra examples that they added yesterday
to remind them of the different types of energy.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

 Have 3 posters with the different forms of energy. One with a lightbulb, one with the sun
and one with headphones drawn on. Go over the definitions of each form of energy, and
write the definition on the bottom of the poster with the students and share the pen so
they can take part in writing definitions as well.
 Pass out sticky notes with a word and picture on it fitting into one of the energy
categories. Each student should be given one sticky note.
 Have students go by group tables to the posters and stick their note in the correct spot.
Example: A picture of a fire should go under heat energy.
 After all students have posted their sticky notes, have them come and sit back on carpet.
Integrate math into the lesson by doing greater than less than with the amount of sticky
notes on each poster board.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific):

When students are posting their sticky notes, teacher should be walking around the classroom
ensuring they are using academic vocabulary, and properly identifying the form of energy.

Closure:
Pass out a “How You Feel” handout and have students draw a picture of one form of energy and
write which form they chose. And have them circle how they feel about the lesson.

Modifications/Notes:
AU students:
-Repeat directions in chunk and model correct behavior during partner activity.
-Give extra wait time when asking questions, or finishing an activity.
-When passing out sticky notes, assign student a buddy to help them go and post it onto the
poster board.
(Students are usually pulled out during this science period for individual assistance)

Behavior:
-Have child sit near the front of classroom for close monitoring and good proximity.
