MECHANICS

1. The resultant of the two forces shown has magnitude 3N.

i. Find α

ii. One of the 6N forces is now replaced by a force of mag. XN acting in the
same direction. Given that the magnitude of the resultant is now 6N, find X.

2. A particle of mass 2.5kg is acted upon by a 20N force. The plane is rough
and the particle is on the point of sliding up the plans.

i. Show that the coefficient of friction is 0.527.

If the 20N force is now removed determines.

ii. Whether or not the particles will slide down.

iii. The acceleration of the particle down the plane if the inclination of the
plane is increased to 40 0.

3. A string, attached to a fixed point A passes over a smooth pulley and is

attached to a particle C which is kept in equilibrium by a 4N force as shown

Calculate:

i). Value of B and tension is string.

ii). The magnitude and direction of the resultant force the string exerts on the
pulley.

4. A, B are at the same height above the ground and the system is released
from rest. Find:
i). acceleration of the particles

ii). Force exerted on the pulley by the string

When the particles have been in motion for 0.8 seconds. A strikes the ground and
becomes detached from the string. Find

iv). Distance moved by each in this time

v). The greatest height above ground reached by B

vi). The total time for which B is in motion before it hits the ground

5.

Of length 170cm which is attached to two points A and C. The bead is kept in
equilibrium by a force QN acting horizontally.

i). Show LABC = 900

Given that the tension in the striking is 6.5N, find the value of
ii. Q

iii. M

6a). The power developed by a motor cycle as it travels on a horizontal road at a

constant speed of 40m/s is 24800W. Calculate the magnitude of resistance to
motion.

The power is suddenly reduced by 25%. Given that the mass of the motor cycle
and rider is 175kg, calculate the deacceleration of the motorcycle at this instant.

b). A lorry A of mass 15000kg climbs a St. hill of length 1000m at constant
speed. The hill is inclined at angle Ѳ where Sin Ѳ = 1/40. The tractive force
of Lorry A has magnitude 10000N. Calculate the work done against to the
motion of Lorry A in climbing the hill.

c). Another Lorry B of mass 18000kg climbs the same hill, its speed decreasing
from 21m/s at the bottom to 7m/s at the top of the hill. The resistance to
motion of Lorry B is constant and has a magnitude of 5500N. Calculate the
work done by engine of lorry B in climbing the hill.

7. A particle moving in a straight line passes through a fixed point O with

velocity 14m/s. Its acceleration a m/s2, t seconds after passing O is given by
a = 2t – 9. The particle subsequently comes to instantaneous rest, firstly, at
A and later at B.

Find:

ii). The greatest speed of the particle as it trends from A to B

iii). The distance AB
