HOME- VISITATION: A REMEDY FOR STUDENTS ABSENTEEISM

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE:

School is an avenue where pupils find chances to develop their skills, knowledge and values by
working with others and with the guidance of a mentor. Learning is the act of acquiring new, or
modifying and reinforcing, existing knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may
involve synthesizing different types of information.

To acquire leanings, pupils are encouraged to attend daily classes to practice their potentials
and engage in daily school activities. However, absenteeism hinders the process of obtaining the
expected learning competencies expected from them. Achieving academic success will be a huge
challenge for the school administrator and Class-Advisers if absenteeism won’t be eradicated.
Excessive school absenteeism is often linked to poor school academic achievement, so school
attendance by pupils plays an integral role in the success and educational advancement levels of any
academic institution and all pupils enrolled.
Since the opening of classes on June till the early August, it was recorded that almost 27% of
the total population of the pupils were keep on being absent. The researchers would like to discover the
fragments on why pupils were engage in absenteeism.
To address the problem on absenteeism the researchers designed an intervention to alleviate the
school performance of the pupils which increase the interest of pupils in academic performance. Home-
visitation is the solution chosen by the researchers to address the problem of absenteeism. There are
many possible goals for these visits including: bridging cultural barriers, reporting on academic
progress, enlisting parental support to increase academic achievement, and giving parents the tools to
do so (Mary Louise Murguia-De La Rosa). It involves the collaboration between the teachers, school
head and parents.

Teachers will conduct home visitation once a month to monitor the performance of pupils at
school and converse with parents about the progress and problems encountered by pupils at school and
school.

I. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE:

School absentees normally start the habit of non–attendance even on their elementary years.
Teachers had hard times on imparting the lessons and inculcating values to them because of incomplete
school attendance. The progress of the pupils weren’t monitored well by respective class advisers
because they just even attended their classes once or twice a week.
Mary Louise Murguia-De La Rosa (2013) defined a home visit as: a visit by a teacher to the
student’s home in the hope of increasing connections between school staff and students in their
community. There are many possible goals for these visits including: bridging cultural barriers,
reporting on academic progress, enlisting parental support to increase academic achievement, and
giving parents the tools to do so.
Excessive student absenteeism can lead to an increasing disinterest in school and academics in
general. According to author Jason A. Schoeneberger’s "Longitudinal Attendance Patterns" study,
excessive absenteeism increases the chances of a student eventually dropping out of school, which can
lead to long term consequences for these students, such as lower average incomes, higher incidences of
unemployment, and a higher likelihood of incarceration. Schoeneberger asserts that students who drop
out of school face a higher risk of poverty because of their inability to secure quality paying employment
due to their lack of education and resources. Dropouts who lack education and resources are more likely
to commit criminal activity leading to incarceration.

III- RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

This study aims to use Home-visitation as remedy in achieving academic success of the pupils
of Sta. Cruz Elementary School, Marihatag District.

Specifically, it will answer the following questions:

1. What are the reasons why pupils engaged in absenteeism?

2. What are the interventions conducted by the school to improve the school performance of the pupils?

3. Is there a significant difference after the intervention conducted after the home-visitation?

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATION:

This action research examined the factors that affect the absenteeism and its intervention from
the factors enumerated among the selected learners of Sta. Cruz Elementary from kinder to grade VI
pupils of the said school. This data was gathered from the daily attendance record that is kept by the
teacher-leader’s office every day and regularly filled out by grade level teachers.. This study also
identified as the purposive sampling, that would involve the learning improvement of the learners upon
the conduct of home-visitation being conducted in Sta. Cruz Elementary School, Sta. Cruz, Marihatag,
Surigao del Sur for the 2nd quarter of S.Y 2016-2017.

V. METHODOLOGY:

A. Sampling
This study will use purposive sampling to the pupils of Sta. Cruz Elementary School; SF2 will
also be the basis on the conduct of the research. All of the known inattentive pupils in school were asked
to answer the constructed questionnaire. They rated various situations, reasons, and causes for being
absent from school. All the data was then organized, tallied, tabulated, and presented in a series of tables
and graphs. Frequency counts, percentage weight values and weighted mean were used in the analysis
and interpretation of data.
The responses were analyzed using a five-point Likers scale with the following equivalent:
never, rarely, sometimes, very, often, and always.

B. DATA COLLECTION:

This study will use the SF2 as primary tool in collecting the pupils attendance from Kinder to
Grade VI of Sta. Cruz Elementary School S.Y 2016-2017. Every end of the month, the class advisers
will submit this form to the principal for recoding purposes. The result of monthly attendance of the
pupils during the first quarter will be the basis of the conduct of the home-visitation. Constructed
questionnaire will be disseminated to the identified learners from the pupils attendance presented by the
teachers from the monthly attendance report.

It is administered during the second quarter of the school year. The researcher will conduct a
home-visitation to identify the learners who are inattentive in the learning development in school. Pupils
with many absences will be the priority of home-visitation.
In conducting the home-visitations, teachers should visit their pupils at home including those
who are living at Sitio Anonang and Purok- Tagdarao. The results of the home-visitation will be the
springboard in weaving interventions to give remedy on the problems existed.

C. ETHICAL ISSUES

The school - head will call for a faculty meeting discussing about the plan. Likewise, concerned
class advisers should prepare their SF-1 as basis in conducting the home-visitation. The class advisers
will also inform the parents on the conduct of home-visitation during GPTA meeting for 2nd quarter on
third week of August.

The parents will be assured on the benefits of the program. Rationale of this will be explained
well. On the other hand, pupils should be informed about the home-visitation. Class adviser must
monitor the attendance of the pupils and encourage each of them to attend their classes daily and
participate in school activities.

D. PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS

The study will utilize quantitative method in analyzing and reporting the gathered data. The
researchers will use descriptive statistics in the treatment of the data, specifically percentage.
