Trigonometric Ratios SummativeKEY

1. Name a use for trigonometric ratios in the real world, and how the concepts would
be applied. ANSWERS WILL VARY : Trigonometry is often used in construction and
engineering. When building or designing plans it is not unusual for an individual to
know the end result of a particular facet of a plan, but not know for sure what the
dimensions of the project should be. For example, a person designing a roof should
know the horizontal distance from the center of the roof to the edge of the
structure which the roof will cover, but he/she could then manipulate the height
and pitch (angle) of the roof to determine a structure within code specifications.
From those measurements, he/she would be able to design the structure and
calculate materials needed for roofing.

2. Refer to the right triangle below. If the Cos A = 2/7, what is the Tan of B? What is a?

Cos A = 2/7, Cos A = .2857, A = 73.39o

If A = 73.39 then B = 16.61
Tan 16.61o = .2983 and side a = 6.7

3. Carrie is standing 100 meters from the base of a cliff. She notices that the angle of
elevation to the top of the cliff is 26o. How high, to the nearest meter, is the cliff she
wants to climb?

Answer: Tan 26 = x/100

X = 48.77 or 49 meters
4. Bobby is flying a kite and has let out all 300 ft of string, which makes a 35 o angle with
the ground, as shown in the figure below. Assuming that there is no sag in the string,
write the equation to calculate the height of the kite. Explain which ratio you used
and why you chose that ratio.
Answer: Sin 35o = x/300

x= 172 feet

This equation is used because

the angle of elevation is given
as well as the hypotenuse. The
opposite side must be found.

Sine uses opposite and hypotenuse of the given angle.

5. How long should the approach to a bridge be if the angle of incline is 6 o and the
bridge must rise 5 feet before leveling off?Draw a diagram for the problem and solve.
Answer: The approach to the bridge should be 47.8 feet. (Sin 6o = 5/x). A diagram
is below.

6. The figure below shows a quarter circle graphed in the first quadrant that contains
angle AOB. What is the value of x, the measure of angle AOB, to the nearest degree?

Answer: Tan x = 8/4

X = 63o
