Chapter 1

The Problem and it's Background

Introduction

Philippines is a tropical island that has only two seasons, the wet and dry

season. Filipinos usually experience a hot weather even though it's not summer

yet, the season in which the weather becames extremely hot. And because of this,

the demand for air-cons and fans or anything that can fight the heat increases. But

there are people who cannot afford such things, so why do not create your own?

Air-con is a difficult one, but anyone can make their own fan. A fan that is safe

enough for everyone especially kids. A bladeless fan which invented by Sir James

Dyson. And because it is bladeless, you do not need to worry about your finger or

hair getting caught by the blade.

Filipinos, specifically the students, need to learn how to make this product

because they usually experience a very hot weather. Lower test scores, decrease

in memory ability, lack of energy and losing focus are just a few symptoms of too

hot temperature conditions in the classroom, work and etc. If the temperature is

too much, the brain is constantly reminding the body to do something about that

condition and because of that constant interruption, people lose their focus on

something they do especially students. Not all public schools can provide enough

fans for their students so learning how to make this bladeless fan would be a huge

help.
The purpose of this study is to let people know how to make their own bladeles

fan.

Background of the Study

A bladeless fan is a fan that has no visible blades. The air flows from the edge

of the ring-like hollow tube. It is in spherical shape like those of traditional fans. It's

blades are hidden in the base and was based on the Air Multiplier Technology that

can give an impressive air flow within a room. The base has a compressor that

draws in air towards the ring and is push through slits. Unlike the traditional fan,

bladeless fan is much more powerful. It multiplies the gush of air coming out. The

fan works on a simple mechanism, to suck in air and push it out, so it doesn't

consume a huge amount of electricity. Since it has no blades, there is no buffeting.

It is also easier to clean than the conventional fan because it doesn't collect dust

easily. And lastly, it's look is nice to look at for the design is very unusual and very

appealing.

Theoretical Framework

Marcus Yam (2009) defines Bladeless fan as; "Unlike the original fan, though, with

its blade-based design, Dyson's new Air Multiplier creates a smooth,

uninterrupted stream of air. This will be a huge plus for those who are bothered by

the "unpleasant buffeting" created by traditional fan designs."

Jason Chen (2010) build this definition, stating that; "But perhaps other than the

style benefit, you have a safety one. When you're getting into the large,

room-sized fan space, you get the worry of having random small objects, not to

mention your own hair, get caught in the blades."

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to teach on how to make a Bladeless Fan and is sought to

answer the following questions:

1. How efficient is the bladeless fan?

2. Is making a bladeless fan would be a big help in reducing the effects of heat

waves?
Hypothesis

The fan is effective in reducing the effect of heat waves.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on how to make a bladeless fan and it's effectiveness in

reducing the effect of heat waves. The researcher aimed to show the

effectiveness of making a bladeless fan in reducing the effect of heat waves. The

respondents were students, teachers and other school staffs in Morong National

High School. They were chosen through Purposive Sampling. A purposive sample

is a non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study.

Definition of Terms

Heat Waves- prolonged period of abnormally hot weather.

Reduce- make smaller or less in amount, degree, or size.

Purposive Sampling- Purposive sampling, also known as judgmental, selective,

or subjective sampling, is a form of non-probability sampling in which researchers

rely on their own judgment when choosing members of the population to

participate in their study. Air Multiplier- a fan which blows air from a ring with no

external blades.

Buffeting- the action of striking someone or something repeatedly and violently.

Research Methodology
Research Design

The researcher made use of descriptive and experimental type of

research.

According to Ojmarrh Mitchell (2015), The term “experimental research design” is

centrally concerned with constructing research that is high in causal (or internal)

validity. Causal validity concerns the accuracy of statements regarding cause and

effect relationships.

The researcher used this method because, experimental research design is a

blueprint of the procedure that enables the researcher to test his hypothesis by

reaching valid conclusions about relationships between independent and

dependent variables. It refers to the conceptual framework within which the

experiment is conducted.

According to Shona McCombes (2019), Descriptive research is an appropriate

choice when the research aim is to identify characteristics, frequencies, trends,

correlations, and categories.

The researcher used descriptive research design because the characteristics of

this method were used a tool to determine if making a bladeless fan is effective to

the cited variables and to know how efficient this bladeless fan to that of
conventional fan. Descriptive research is an appropriate choice when the research

aim is to identify characteristics, frequencies, trends, correlations, and categories.

Setting of the Study

The study was conducted at Morong Rizal, specifically in Morong

National High School.

Subject of the Study

This study associated those students and teachers who experience a very

hot weather inside their classrooms because of having not enough fans to use.

Other school staffs were also the respondents of this study, five students, five

teachers and five other school staffs with the total of fifteen respondents. They

were chosen through a Purposive Sampling Technique.

Sources of Data

To know the effectivity and efficiency of a bladeless fan, the researcher

made a 10-item questionnaire checklist for the selected students, teachers and

other school staffs.

Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

5 4.20-5.00 Very much efficient

4 3.40-4.19 Very efficient

3 2.60-3.39 Efficient
2 1.80-2.59 Fairly efficient

1 1.00-1.79 Not efficient at all

Procedure of the Study

In conducting the study, the following steps were followed:

 Development of the Study

The researcher proposed the title for approval; the researcher gathered

information about the title; the researcher identified the problem, determined the

place where the research will be done, knowing the scope and limitation of the

study and it's conceptual and theoretical framework; the researcher began the

research methodology.

 Selection of Respondents

The researcher chose the respondents according to the objective of the study

with the used of Purposive Sampling.

 Conduct of the Study

The study conducted at Morong National High School. The study conducted to

know the efficiency of bladeless fan and to know how to make it.
 Experimentation

The researcher tested if how will the air flow from the base through the

ring-like hollow top of the fan.

 Administration of Questionnaire Checklist/Survey Form

The questionnaire checklist was used to know the effectivity and efficiency of

bladeless fan in reducing the effect of heat waves. After doing the checklist, the

researcher interpreted, computed and tabulated the data gathered from the

respondents. In doing so, the researcher made conclusions and

recommendations.

Statistical Treatment

To answer the statement of the problem of the study, the following statistical

treatment were used:

To determine the efficiency/effectivity of bladeless fan, mean and standard

deviation were used.
