Design Assignment
Class B. Arch II year
Session: 2013-14
Subject: Architectural Design-II ( AR-201)

Design Programme:

To design a Tourist Resort on the proposed site near Desert resort, Mukandgarh road, Mandawa,
Rajasthan.

Design Intent:

 To understand the concept of vernacular architecture and related construction technique.

 To work with reference to the vernacular context of the site and buildings around it

 To work on design parameters for a contoured site.

 To work on climate responsive architecture for desert type of climates.

 To understand the socio-economic and socio-cultural parameters related to design for a

particular region.

Design Preamble:

Mandawa, a sleepy town in the semi-arid desert region of Northern Rajasthan though exhibits immense
tourism potential but is currently a remote town far away from important tourism destinations of
Rajasthan. While Mandawa reflects a unique case of vernacular culture and Architectural heritage, it also
exhibits its reflections in the socio-cultural and socio-economic backdrop of the society. The uniqueness
of its architectural heritage lies within its fine blend with marvelous art works over its façade.
Capitalizing this potential, it is proposed that a tourist resort should be designed with all modern amenities
but with having a vernacular identity in terms of its Art and Architecture.

The site situated on mukandgarh road has a vernacular context to it in the form of Baoli adjacent to its
east side and desert resort on west side. The site also compromises of low contours with sparse
vegetation.
