PREFACE

This report is prepared on the basis of soil and blanket test results
of the samples collected from various construction projects of Indian
Railway and tested at Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, RDSO,
Lucknow. Views expressed in this report are based on the test results of
soil and blanket samples for different locations of all over Indian
Railway.

STUDY REPORT ON COLLECTION OF DATA
ON BLANKET MATERIALS

1.0 INTRODUCTION

To avoid failure of track formation due to inadequate bearing capacity


and to safeguard against swelling, shrinking and mud pumping of
formation, the blanket material has a significant role over subgrade. In
construction of formation for new lines, the provision of blanket over
subgrade has been made compulsory. The thickness of blanket depends
on the type of soil used in earthwork. Similarly, in the case of unstable
formation in existing lines, the blanket is used for rehabilitation. The
performance at field in providing the blanket material to suitable
specification is far from satisfactory, which was concluded from the
report GE-37 prepared during year May-2001 by testing soil samples up
to 2001.

2.0 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study of this report is to compile data on blanket


material collected and tested by RDSO from year 2002 to 2004 to assess
the adaptation of the specifications by field.

3.0 SPECIFICATIONS FOR BLANKET MATERIAL

Blanket material should generally conform to following specifications: -

(a) It should be coarse, granular and well graded.


(b) Skip graded material is not permissible.
(c) Non-plastic fines (Particles of size less than 75 micron) are limited
to maximum to 12% where as plastic fines are limited upto
maximum 5%.
(d) The particles size distribution curve of blanket material should lie
within the enveloping curves of blanket material.
(e) Its uniformity coefficient, Cu (D60/D10) should be greater than 4
preferably above 7.
(f) Its coefficient of curvature, Cc (D302 / D60xD10) should be within1
& 3.
(g) The material for upper blanket layer shall be well-graded sandy
gravel or crushed rock within the enveloping curves for upper

4.0 QUALITY CONTROL OF BLANKET AT SITE

Quality control of blanket at site is necessary to ensure better quality of


earthwork. Some of the important points for quality control of blanket are
given as following: -

(i) Quality of blanket material at site should conform to specifications for


blanket material.
(ii) Minimum one test per 500 cum or part thereof should be conducted at
site.
(iii) The blanket material which contains fines passing 75 micron I.S.sieve,
upto 5% should have Density Index (Relative Density) a minimum of
70% as obtained in accordance with IS:2720 (Part-XXIV)- 1983.
(iv) For other materials, field dry density should not be less than maximum
attainable dry density obtained in field compaction trials. However, in
field compaction trial, the maximum attainable dry density should not be
less than 98% of MDD values as obtained by Heavy Compaction Test
(I.S.: 2720 –Part VIII-1983) in the laboratory.
(v) Blanket material should be tested as per IS:2720 (Part-IV) to plot particle
size distribution curve so as to assess its suitability. It would be necessary
to carry out wet analysis to assess actual percentage of fines. To expedite
testing work, dry sieve analysis is not significant and adequate margin
exists with respect to acceptance criteria. However, in such cases also,
wet analysis has to be carried out at frequent intervals to verify the extent
variation. In any situation, acceptance of blanket material would be based
on wet analysis only. The sample for wet analysis should be prepared as
per para 4.3 of IS: 2720 (Part-IV).
(vi) For measurement of field dry density and optimum moisture content of
blanket layer, the following methods can be adopted as per requirements
at site: -

1. Sand replacement method- may be adopted for all types of


materials

2. Core cutter method- for material in which core cutter can be


penetrated and material retained fully after core cutter is taken out.

3. Nuclear moisture density gauge- may be used for measurement of


density and moisture content.

5.0 LAYING, SPREADING AND COMPACTION OF BLANKET

(i) The blanket material should be transported wet after mixing water in
order to achieve OMC, in tippers for direct unloading on formation.
Water may also be sprinkled after spreading of dry blanket on sub grade
near OMC.

(ii) The blanket material may be spread with a tractor mounted grader or a
paver finisher in layer of uniform thickness before allowing compaction

(iii) Compaction to specified levels of Relative Density or percentage of


MDD will be carried out through a number of passes of vibratory rollers
of 100-120 KN or more static weight or equivalent capacity. The required
number of passes of vibratory rollers to achieve the desired density at site
should be decided after field compaction trials before compaction at site.
The speed of the roller should not exceed 5 km/h during compaction of
blanket.

(iv) Rolling is to be carried out in layers of not more than 300 mm each
following the same camber profile as provided in the sub grade layer and
to be maintained upto the top layer.

(v) The edges and sides of embankment should be hand rammed with a
suitable rammer.

(vi) Proper control of moisture is required to optimize the compaction effort.


Optimum moisture content may be established through Modified Proctor
Density Apparatus (IS:2720, Part-VIII) and moisture may be added by
sprinkling at the plant or at site as per the requirement.

6.0 DETAILS OF BLANKET TEST RESULTS TESTED AT GE


LABORATORY

Summary of blanket test results is given in Annexure-I & II.

The results of the test reports of G. E. Laboratory of blanket material at


various new line/doubling project sites which were executed in year 2002,
2003 and 2004 have been analysed and following conclusions are drawn :-

7.0. CONCLUSIONS

1. From the summary of blanket test results, it is observed that most of the
samples of blanket collected from the field are not satisfying the
specifications of blanket material. The following table gives the position of
samples with respect to specifications: -

It can be seen that the samples not conforming to specification are as high
as 79% during year 2004 &2003.

The details of data as given in Annexure-II has been summarised in the


above table. It can be seen that the locations/projects where blanket has
been provided as per the specification are in miniscule proportion. In large
number of projects all samples have failed in conforming the
specifications.

The thickness of blanket material to be spread on the sub grade depends on


the type of sub grade soil. As per the above table in many projects the
thickness of the blanket layer provided is less than the specified thickness.

3. Uniformity coefficients (Cu) and coefficient of curvature (Cc) values for


few samples are not lying within limits. Most of the deviations have been
observed in Cc values, which are less than 1.

Therefore, emphasis should be given to lay the blanket layer with


suitable material and it should be laid to specified thickness to avoid future
formation troubles. Blanket material of suitable specification can be
obtained by blending different materials at crushers in suitable proportions.
Though materials produced by crushers are costlier, yet they are generally
found satisfying the specifications of blanket. Strict quality control is
required during blending of the natural materials so that fines can be
controlled within limits. This will lead to trouble free new formations and
the rehabilitated unstable formations.
