Q#-1
For a smooth-walled conduit, neglecting wall roughness, we might assume that the average
fluid shear stress (dependent variable) at the wall is some function of ρ, μ,V and Rh
(Independent variables)  o  f (  ,  ,V , Rh )
V2
By taking μ, V, and Rh as primary variables, prove that: o  Cf 

In the laminar flow of a fluid in a circular pipe, the velocity profile is exactly a true parabola.
The discharge is then represented by the volume of a paraboloid. Prove that for this case the
ratio of the mean velocity to the maximum velocity is 0.5.

Q#-3
An oil (ρ = 868.5 kg/m3 and μ = 0.0814 kg/ms) is to flow through a 300 m level concrete
pipe. What size pipe will carry 0.0142 m3/s with a pressure drop due to friction of 23.94 kPa?

Q#-4
Oil with a kinematic viscosity of 241 × 10–6 m2/s and density of 945 kg/m3 flows through a
pipe of 5 cm dia. and 300 m length with a velocity of 2 m/s. Determine the pump power,
assuming an overall pump efficiency of 45%, to overcome friction.

Q#-5
An oil of specific gravity 0.82 and kinematic viscosity 16 × 10 –6 m2/s flows in a smooth pipe
of 8 cm diameter at a rate of 2 lit/s. Determine whether the flow is laminar or turbulent. Also
calculate the velocity at the centre line and the velocity at a radius of 2.5 cm. What is head
loss for a length of 10 m. Also determine the wall shear.

Q#-6
Oil with an absolute viscosity of 0.16 N s/m2 and a density of 925 kg/m3 is flowing in a 200-
mm diameter pipe at 0.5 L/s. How much horse power is lost per meter of pipe length?
