Important comments
- The scholars agree that the names of the surahs are Tawqeefiyyah which means they were
given to them based on revelation.
- There are some surahs which were given more than one name by the Prophet.
Example:
1- Al-Fatihah ا ْﻝﻔﺎﺘِ َﺤﺔwas called: Umm Al-Quran م اْﻝﻘُْرآن ُ( أMother of the Qur’aan) and As-Sab3u-l-
Mathaanee ﺒﻊُ ا ْﻝ َﻤﺜﺎﻨِﻲْ ( اﻝﺴThe Seven Repeatedly Recited)
2- At-Taubah ْوَﺒﺔاﻝﺘ: it is also called Baraa’ah اءة
َ ( َﺒرFreedom From All Obligations)
6-Fussilat ﺼﻠَت
ُ ﻓ: it is also called “Ha Meem As-Sajdah ﺠدة
ْ َﺤم اﻝﺴ (Haa Meem, the Prostration)
