Communication and Globalization

Globalization
 The process by which people and goods move easily across borders.

 A cultural element, as ideas and traditions are traded and assimilated.

 An economic concept- the integration of markets, trade and investments with

few barriers to slow the flows of products and services between nations.

 Brought many benefits to many people. But not to everyone.

 Rapid proliferation of communication and information technologies.

Example;

First Starbucks outlet opened its doors in 1971 in the city of Seatle. Today it has
15,000 stores in 50 countries. You can find it anywhere, and simply shows that
this is a truly globalized company.

 Our ever increasingly ability to share our God-given and complementary gifts
with one another holds with a possibilities of enlarging the scope of our
communication and solidarity.

 Mainly deals with the interconnectedness of the people in a global manner.

 We can now more easily, rapidly, and cheaply move and thus share ourselves,
our consumer goods, our material and human capital, and the values that
comprise our respective cultures.

 Globalization would not have been possible, without the pressence of mass
media.

 Helped the people to be updated with each other and in every happenings of the
worlds.

The Globalization Phenomenon

How did globalization happen?

 Globalization is a relatively new phenomenon, but it’s been around for centuries

 Began after the internet was invented

 Globalization has speeded up enormously over the last half-century, thanks to

great leaps in technology

 Internet has revolutionized connectivity and communication

Example

• The silk road, when trade spread rapidly between china and Europe via an
overland route.
• Merchants carried goods for trade back and forth, trading silk, gems,
spices and coffee.

• The habit of drinking coffee in a social eating originate from a turkish

custom.

• Globalization can spread culture across borders.

The Impact of Globalization on Communication

 More language contact happens

 Made communication more challenging

 Rising cost of information technologies

 Modes and forms of communication have changed

 Deepening poverty

 Advent of email made communication faster than ever.

 Invention of enormous container ships helped too.

 Improvements in transport generally faster ships.

 Allowed us to move around the globe much more easily.

 It’s led to many millions of people being lifted out of poverty

 News travels faster than ever before

 Every step forward in technology brings with it new danger

 Computer have vastly improve our lives, but cyber criminals steal millions of
pounds a year

 At the touch of the button we are able to communicate with people across the
world

 Impacting the ways we communicate and learn in fascinating ways

 Expanding our understanding of fellowship and as we become more connected

 Deepening our educational experiences

 Rise in the use of the internet in particular has been incredibly instrumental in
improving the ways in which we connect with one another

 Opportunity to view diverse perspectives that were outside of our scope before

 Able to fully connect with someone who is thousands of miles away in real time
and the effects is profound

For example,
 Two children taking an online math course together; a child from Texas
and a child from Japan for example. These two students are able to share
not only the content of the math class but their cultural perspective as
well. That kind of exchange opens up your sense of what parts of the
world are accessible to you, which in turn lays the foundation for an
evolved worldwide.
