Background and Purpose
What are the issues in the community and how did this program/project help
address them?
Reading is essential. It is a skill that should not be taught once but
continuously. Also, reading is a tool that can help a learner widen his/her
knowledge. It gives every learner an opportunity to explore, imagine and even
create many things.
Before teachers can design and provide appropriate reading instruction for
their students, they should be armed with information about their students’
current reading levels and abilities.
As a result of the conduct of Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-Iri) in
the beginning of the school year, English and Filipino teachers of TVNHS
identified 60 struggling readers that need interventions. Some difficulties in
reading were also identified such as (1) Issues with decoding also known as
sounding out words, (2) Poor comprehension of students, (3) speed and (4)
fluency.
In order to address the aforementioned issues in reading, Project L.E.A.R.N
(Learners’ Enhancement Activities in Reading Needs) was created. It is a joint
project of English and Filipino teachers. Project L.E.A.R.N. will help identified
struggling readers to enhance their reading skill and increase their performance
in other learning areas.
