BSTM 1A Understanding the Self

“I paint myself because I am alone. I paint myself because I am the subject I know
best.”

Considered one of the Mexico’s greatest artist, Frida Kahlo was born on July 6,1907 in
Coyocoan, Mexico City. She grew up in the family’s house where was later referred as i
She also received different awards before and after her death; In 1946, she received
the National Prize of Arts and Sciences, which was conferred upon her by the Ministry of
Public Education. Her self-portrait 'Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird’ is
one of her seminal works. Her painting, ‘The Broken Column’, painted right after she had
spine surgery, is one of her most important works. This painting is symbolic of her physical
and psychological struggles throughout her life. She is one of Mexico's greatest artists
even after death. I admire her on how she put her expressions into painting. Despite of
her condition and her illness, she still managed to have time for her passion, and that is
painting. I admire her because I paint also, I want to be known not for my capability to
think, but with my ability to put my emotions into an artwork.

I don’t believe that her brain leads her to success; it’s her heart that led her to it. It is
because of her compassion and hard work. Her painting was her happiness and that’s
what made her live for over a decade. Her was just helped her think of the subject, but
her heart is the reason why Frida Kahlo is Frida Kahlo.

“I am not sick. I am not broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I paint.”
