Motivational Stories
motivational, uplifting stories, life lessons…
A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and
proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook
the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled
up the remaining open areas of the jar.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous
“Yes.”
“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The
rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children –
things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The
sand is everything else, the small stuff.”
“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or
the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small
stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to
the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out
dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or
fix the disposal.”
“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is
just sand.”

Yes, it is true. we need to prioritize our family first. Sometimes, in our life, we are succumb
on the happiness from outside and eventually could not escape. (that is the sand, the jar
eventually full with sand, and there is no more space for the rock which is our family).

I in fact believe this has touched my skin! I have never thought to think of life as a mason
jar filled with grimy dirt and sand, topped of with some cheap beer. Really makes you
broaden you outlook on the URGENT and IMPORTANT as that one “Dr phil wana be”” was
philosophizing about in the comments previously. Plus if you think about it we all only live
once with short life’s at that. So go find a mason jar and take long hard elimination inside
it. You will then appreciate everything in life compared to the droppings you have in your
reconciled jar.!

This story taught me the most valuable that family is rather than spending time with other

I liked it. Truly inspiring story…normally people go in search of small stuff, which will not
give peace and happiness in life..the thing is..always our family is our backbone..without
the support of our family ,we cant achieve anything in our life..so give them space in your
life rather than the less valued small stuffs..

When young we gave priority to sand, pebbles and then to rocks. As adults we reverse the
order: rocks, pebbles and sand. The story is well wrought out.

So simpler and easier-seeming to just fill your life with sand… Perhaps if once the jar is
full, your life is up, then filling up with sand would be less tempting cause it would finish a
lot faster! Also note if you know where to place them, you can fit more in by adding some
pebbles and sand at the same time as adding the large rocks.

The story is true. Without no shadow of doubt, there are many of impecable birth and they
end up misusing their prowes just because they take less important things to occupy the
largest percentage of their lives.
