Parkour first started in France in the late 1980s. It was created by David Belle when he was just 15
years old. David found inspiration in his father, who was a firefighter. David's father liked being fit
and he followed the Georges Hébert training method – the Natural Method – which used only the
body and the things around you for exercising.

But what is parkour? Parkour is an activity that you can practise alone or with others. In parkour,
you have to run, climb, jump or roll over, around or through things you find in the street like cars,
walls, benches or roofs of buildings. You move from one place to another quickly. The only
equipment that you need is a pair of trainers. People who practise parkour are traceurs. A jam is a
meeting of traceurs, and it can take minutes, hours or days. You need to be very flexible, have good
balance and lots of concentration. A typical move is the passe murailles. You have to run at a wall
and then climb over it. Another move is the passement. You have to go over something using your
hands.

Many people think that parkour is an extreme sport. David Belle says it isn't a sport because it isn't
competitive. In his opinion, the most important thing about parkour is knowing yourself and your
limits. You don't compete to be better than other people. You compete against yourself. For most
people, parkour is an athletic activity.
