EEE726: Advanced Power System Dynamics
Assignment 1: Transient Stability Analysis

1. Introduction: This assignment assesses your ability to undertake relevant numerical

simulations. The information generated will also need to be analyzed and presented in a
coherent form.

2. Learning Outcomes: After completing this practical work you will

• Know how to assess the transient stability of power transmission networks.

• Be able to calculate the critical fault-clearing angle (and time).

• Be familiar with the effects of series capacitors, machine inertias and operating
voltages on the transient stability of a power network.

3. Tasks/Questions

Determine the critical fault-clearing angle for the network shown below, when a three-
phase fault occurs at B, and the circuit breakers at A and B operate simultaneously. The
generator is delivering 1.0pu active power before the fault occurs. Assuming the inertia
constant H = 4.0 and the time interval is 0.05 seconds:
3.1 Using a suitable numerical method and a programming environment of your own choice
determine the critical clearing time.

3.2 Plot the swing curves, both under sustained fault and when the breakers have operated.

1
Discuss, in detail, the effect on the results (as in 3.1 and 3.2 above) of:

3.3 Increasing |E| to 1.3pu.

3.4 Introducing a series capacitor of –j0.2pu along AB (in series with the j0.3pu reactance).

3.5 Increasing the inertia constant to 6.0

3.6 Using high-speed circuit breakers.

3.7 Using a time interval of 0.1 seconds.

X = j0.52

X = j0.26 X = j0.07
|E| = 1.1pu
V = 1.0pu

A X = j0.3 B (infinite bus)

4. Assessment

The assessment will be on the basis of your report. Your report should be up to 8 sides of A4,
including diagrams, etc., with text at 10-point font or greater. You can include additional
appendices, etc. beyond 8 pages, but only the first 8 pages of your report will be assessed in
the marking process.

This is an individual assignment. You may discuss your ideas and problems in a general way
with other students, but you must not copy or share text, data files, specific results, calculations,
etc.

Any material ‘cut and paste’ from the web, or copied from any source, must be presented as a
quotation (e.g. within “quotation marks”) and clearly referenced at the point where it occurs in
the report.

Violation of these rules is regarded as plagiarism and is treated extremely severely by the
University.

Assignment 2: Voltage Stability Analysis of the Nigerian Power System

1. Introduction: The major focus of this assignment is to train graduate students in developing
research ability related to power system dynamics through individual or group projects.
Students will simulate and analyze voltage stability of part of the Nigerian power network. It
is expected that the students will learn to approach problems in power system dynamics
through literature study and hands-on–projects using PSS/E software or other tools for
system analysis.

This assignment will study the transfer of power from generators to an increasing load in a
specific region.

2. Tasks and Questions:

2.1 Using the PSS/E software or other tools for system analysis and the 28-bus Nigerian
330kV transmission data published by Jokojeje el al [1], obtain the base case voltages.
Identify those busbars with low voltages (i.e. below 0.95 per unit).
2.2 Define an injection group containing generators to serve as the “source”. It is assumed
that these will participate in proportion to their MW reserves (i.e. the generators should
be within their min/max MW limits).
2.3 Define the “sink” group as the loads to be monitored within a region (for example South-
East). This will then define the transmission boundary of interest. The PV study will
model an increasing transfer from this “source” to “sink”.
2.4 Increase the loads in the “sink” group as well as the generation in the “source” group to
maintain same generation/load balance.
Do not allow negative loads.
Ensure that you maintain constant MW/MVAr ratio at each load.
2.5 Plot the P-V curves
Which is the “first busbar” to reach the voltage collapse limit?
What is the MW transfer limit?
2.6 Identify some critical contingencies on the Nigerian power network.
What criteria did you use?
Repeat steps 2.4 to 2.5 above.
2.7 Discuss the effectiveness of your approach.
2.8 What control measures can you use to improve on the voltage stability of the Nigerian
power system.

3. Assessment

Write up your results as a potential research paper to be considered for publication in the
Nigerian Journal of Technology.
