Why bachelor of mechanical engineering?

In today’s developing world, engineering itself is so prominent especially mechanical

engineering. As the society continues to expand, the growing needs and demands of
public supportive and advance machines is rapidly growing too . This is why mechanical
engineering has particularly interested me. I have always imagined myself as one, playing
an important part in the process of change and growth. Therefore, all I seek is education
to power my desire and certainty to create them. Ever since early highschool,
Mathematics, science and technology have always excited me. I wish to pursue the
Bachelor of mechanical Engineering through the pathway to engineering program. The
total duration of the course is four years including one year of the pathway program i.e
diploma course. The best part about diploma is that I wont be wasting an extra year. The
1 year program will lead to 2nd year of Bachelors degree. I’m willing to start off with the
pathway program as I’m very passionate about this field and it’s a great program that will
support and power my dream of professionally occupying this field, providing me with
the basic foundation I need for further years into the course. Having gone through the
course structure at the University of Western Sydney University, it will provide me the
practical knowledge about different machines, dynamics, thermodynamics, material
science, structural analysis, and many more. which will be very beneficial in developing
many skills. The course covers all different domains like mechanical, civil, construction,
robotics and mechatronics before specialising in one so that its experienced before
having to pick one. Moreover, I believe that for success in this field, perseverance and
management are extremely vital followed by a lot of motivation, dedication and hard
work.

Why not india?

I would like to bring you in light of information that I skipped the idea of pursuing my
higher studies from India. The core explanation to this is that the academic institutions
in India lack a serious culture of teaching and learning. When students do not learn
enough, we must question whether institutions of higher education deliver enough value
to justify their costs. Resolving the learning crisis will therefore require fundamental,
thoroughgoing changes in our colleges and universities. There must be real change
beyond simplistic answers such as reducing costs and improving efficiency -- to improve
value. There are many well-known institutes in India which provide Bachelors Degree in
Mechanical Engineering like IITs, NITs, BITS, IISc, etc. which provide this course but,
because of the “Reservation System”, number of seats available for General Category
students are very limited. Hence, only a few students with extremely high score can get
admission. They don’t have pathway system. Also diploma in India is of 3 years which
leads to bachelor of again 3 years. Also, looking from international recognition, very few
institutes in India are internationally verified. Also in addition India has 750 universities
still there are very few i.e only 7 universities coming in top 200 universities and Australia
has only 39 universities out of which 15 are coming in top 200 for engineering. This is the
major difference in quality to education. Besides grading India has many universities
systems, students’ performance is judged by final written exam and not the real practical
skills students posses. Moreover, some beyond classroom activities like, industrial visits,
are vital for students and Indian education system hardly introduces any students to it.
Also, with the advancement in technology, it is needed to be updated with the latest
machines and equipment, but it has no role in Indian education system. With the same
outdated syllabus, which has not been updated from years; and ineffective teaching
methods, Indian education system fails to make any graduate fit for securing their place
at job.

Why not any other country?

So, l started to search the best option for me in overseas countries and got to know about
many positive and negative aspects in studying USA, UK, Canada and Australia. In the
USA, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University West Lafayette, and University of
Southern California are well known Universities which provide Bachelor of Mechanical
Engineering to international students. There is an extra requirement which is SAT
examination which takes much time and the entry requirement depends on SAT score
also along with academics which makes it difficult to get in the university. So, I started
looking for best option for me and sought Australia that has many well reputed
universities, which hold their world rank under 300. Now when I compared Canada with
Australia, then I realized that in Australia, l has a plethora of options to opt my desired
course, university and city, while in Canada, l had limited amount of options for the same.
Finally, l decided to apply for Australia for bachelor degree. After that, l invested my
quality of time in researching my interest of bachelor courses and well reputed
universities in Australia. Now, l has applied in Western Sydney University, for the course
bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, which is purely of my interest.

Why Australia?

I come from a well-developed city which has some good government and private
institutions providing good education right from school to post graduation. However, I
feel there is minimal of practical experience provided and rather focused more on
coursework especially for bachelor of mechanical engineering.Australian institutions
tend to have project based learning, which is exactly what I’m looking for. I always wished
to pursue my further studies in Australia because of its innovative learning environment
and its well reputed and internationally recognized universities. Australia is considered
as one of the finest and safest countries in the world with a quality standard of living as
compared to other countries. The weather in Australia is very similar to my home
country. therefore, making it easier to adapt as compared to other countries like Canada.
The rate of adopting new technologies is higher in Australia. Therefore, institutions
provide a lot of practical approach towards learning rather than just theory. This is why
I specifically choose to study in Australia rather than any other developed country like
the UK, USA or Canada. Multiculturalist is another thing that really attracted me towards
Australia. Moreover, having known that the Australian government regulates all the
universities each year, making sure that the standards of higher education are met.
Finally, internationally, Australian qualification is recognized and valued by other
institutes and employers worldwide.

Why Western Sydney University?

Therefore, choosing Western Sydney University, I feel pathway into engineering followed
by the Bachelor of Mechanical engineering will provide me with the knowledge and
expertise required. Besides having good institutions back home, I wish to pursue this
course at the University of western Sydney, because its internationally recognized and
highly regarded. As per Times Higher education world university rankings, Western
Sydney University is ranked in world top 300 universities and 70 in Asia-Pacific.
Specifically in Australia, its ranked in top 20 universities. This will be very beneficial later
on, especially when I have to return back home. Being able to study at this university
would be dream come true. Looking through different universities and the teaching
programs that they offer, I found that western Sydney University has the most distinct
model of learning with of a lot of real world experience, which is exactly what I was
looking for. Also the university offers a range of services and programs for international
students helping them to adapt to the Australian way of living and learning. The
university of Western Sydney is well ranked, and the fees are most affordable with the
quality of learning that they provide as compared to other universities like University of
technology Sydney and The University of Tasmania with mostly similar rankings and
course whose fees is about 37,000 and 36,000 AUD respectively. Further on the majors
provided by the University for this Course that to be chosen from are most appealing as
per my interest as compared to few other universities with the same course available as
compared to UTS specifically. As I searched on the internet, I found Sydney as the most
ideal place to study and live. This is as its well-developing city with a lot of ongoing
mechanical work I will get exposure with ongoing technology advances. Further on, other
universities like UTS, the course is offered at the campus located at the city of Sydney.
This means the travelling and living expenses will be higher. Whereas, choosing WSU
specifically the parramatta campus would be the most ideal, convenient and affordable in
terms of the living, travelling and other expenses. Also UTS fees is 36000 AUD $ per year
which is much higher as compared to WSU . While the university I am going is having the
same course with much lower fees.

Future goals:

As a professional, I wish to be a leader in my field. As India is one of the fastest growing

economy in the world. I intend to contribute to its growing necessities for machines and
progression. I intend to get the best education possible and return back to India as the
opportunities here for mechanical engineers are growing day by day. After completing
my study in Australia, I wish to work in field in mechanic as a junior mechanical engineer
and product designer – AutoCAD specialist for about two years through the PSW visa
where hopefully. I will to secure a job with a good salary. This will provide me some good
practical experience. After that I intend to return back to my country and get a job. The
average salary in field of mechanical is around 5-6 lakh INR per annum. If I would have
completed my degree from India, my salary would be starting from 2-3 lakh INR per
annum as there are thousands of mechanical engineers passing every year. Hopefully
securing a job with a salary similar to this as I mentioned will help me recover the
expenses that I have had invested for my study. Initially as I return back home, my father
will fund my living until I get a job. As the indian government is investing heavily in
mechanical projects like metro rails, railways, bullet rails, this will open up a lot of
opportunity in the field of mechanical in coming years. Moreover, there will be many
lucrative job opportunities available in India for me as a technological as well as an
industrial expert and for that I expect atleast 7-8 lakh INR per annum; as India, being one
of the fastest developing countries, the growth of mechanical sector is ever increasing and
there will be must demand of engineers especially in mechanical field. Multi-national
industries like reliance industry, BHEL, SAIL, TISCO, and adani projects, offers wide range
of jobs. My dream is to get employed at one of these company as they’re highly reputed
and decent paid. I wish to seek the best education and exposure to the latest technology
to power my dreams. The Bachelor of Mechanical at Western Sydney University offers me
this. Having gone through the requirements of this course and its focus on practical
applications and depth of research found to be most ideal as per my requirements.

Reason to return back home country:

I would go alone to Australia for pursuing my bachelor degree. Having completed my

bachelordegree, I would have many job opportunities in my home country. Also, besides my
emotional attachment towards my parents and all of my family members living in my country,
I am bound to have many family responsibilities including taking care of my parents as well
as I am the only son to my parents and we cannot be away for long. Moreover, my family owns
assets worth 2,26,20,684 INR which will be inherited to me and I will have to take care of it
when I return to my country India.

Higher education visa subclass 500:

I am aware that I will apply for student visa which is under 500 subclass visa category

 My visa duration is same as my course duration.

 I can work up to 40 hours a fortnight.
 Moreover, with this student visa I must maintain 80% attendance in my course duration.
 If I change my address, I have to inform my university within 7 days.
 I have to maintain enrolment in a registered course and satisfy my provider’s
requirements for attendance and course progress.
 I have to maintain sufficient financial capacity to support my study and stay in Australia.
I declare that the particulars given above are true and correct as per my best knowledge.
I understand that incorrect or misleading statements may result in refusal of my
admission and or student visa application.

Yours Truly,

Akshar Patel
