NATIONAL READING MONTH 2018

NARRATIVE REPORT

Reading is one of the fundamental skills that each child has

to develop. The school is the perfect place where learners
experienced varied reading activities that hone learners’ reading
skills and abilities. The Department of Education spearheaded the
Nationwide Celebration of the 2018 National Reading Month (NRM)
this November to promote love for reading and to celebrate the
diversity of learners and culture through reading.

Bentig-Calunasan Elementary School had celebrated the reading

month through conducting varied activities that would greatly help
the learners to develop love for reading. One of these activities
was the “Reading Family” wherein the school conducted a symposium
for the parents and guardians that gave emphasis on the importance
of reading to the children at home. The participants of the
symposium were encouraged to keep on giving follow-ups on their
children’s reading abilities and helping them become successful
readers. Another activity was “Help a reader. Be a volunteer.”
wherein parents volunteered to render service in conducting a
remedial reading to the learners who have difficulties in reading.
This activity strengthened the harmonious relationship of the
school and the community. Moreover, “#Shareabook” was also
conducted wherein teachers and pupils were encouraged to share
story books for the children. There was a drop box provided where
they would place their shared books to be used as additional books
for reading areas or mini-library of different grade levels. And
it was truly a successful activity because more pupils and teachers
have shared and participated. In addition, one of the most
highlighted activity was the conduct of “Araw ng Pagbasa Challenge”
wherein the school had a synchronized reading of varied stories
done by the learners of different grade levels to promote reading
and literacy about Filipino heritage and Filipino values.
The conducted activities made the National Reading Month
(NRM)a colorful one. Learners were able to experience pleasure and
develop love for reading. Indeed, varied reading activities would
surely help children not just increasing and strengthening their
vocabulary and comprehension skills, but also elevate their
educational performance.
