Narrative Report on the 2022 National Reading Month Celebration

In line with its goal to motivate reading among our children, communities, educators, and leaders
to make reading fun and a shared physical experience, the Department of Education (DepEd) celebrated
National Reading Month nationwide from Nov. 4-30.

Today we might take reading for granted but it has a very long history and there was a time when
only a few people knew how to read. The first written communication did not happen until 3500 B.C.,
and the first books did not appear until around 23 B.C. in Rome. Around this time, books were also
developed in some Asian countries and the Middle East. Before the printing press was introduced in the
15th century, books were quite expensive and rare but as printed books gained popularity, Literacy rates
began to rise. In 1892, the first book covers appeared and in the 19th century, publishers started printing
books with hardbacks.

Nowadays, even though almost everyone can read, people hardly read and, unfortunately, we are
losing our reading culture as a society. That is why we all need this National Reading Month which is a
whole month to help us revive our reading habits.

With the theme “_Pagbasa Susi sa Magandang Kinabukasan” our school celebrated National
Reading Month through a simple program on Nov. 28. It was started by a parade of pupils wearing their
book character costumes. It was followed by the National Anthem conducted by Ms.Resette Mae Reano,
Grade 4 adviser, then a prayer led by Mr. Ruben Sanchez, Grade 5 adviser , followed by an opening
remarks from our Teacher-in-charge, Mrs. Maribel M. Pacurib. She gave emphasis on the role of
educators in every child’s lives. She reiterated that every child must be a total reader. The last part of the
program was the presentation of pupils, dressed with their chosen book characters in English and Filipino.

At exactly 9:00 am Story telling time began in their respective classrooms to emphasize the
importance of reading. The Grade I pupils read stories written in their own Mother Tongue to emphasize
local culture and traditions.
