Detailed Lesson Plan in Technology and Livelihood Education

Masonry
(Grade-9)

I. Objectives:
a. Discuss the different types of Personal Protective Equipment.
b. Identify what type of Personal Protective Equipment is used for a certain type of work.
c. Value the importance of knowing how to properly use the different types of Personal
Protective Equipment.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Types of Personal Protective Equipment
Reference: Technical-Vocational Livelihood Industrial Arts: Masonry Learner’s
Material: Module 1 (pages 31-34)
Materials: Manila paper, Chalk, Pictures

III. Procedure:
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
a. Routine
Good morning class! Good morning ma’am.
Let us start our day by asking guidance to
our Lord. Are you ready to pray classmates?
(Name of student) will you lead the prayer? Yes, we are.
Let us pray.
(Prays the Lord’s Prayer)

Class Secretary are there any absent for

today? None, ma’am.
Thank you.

b. Review
Class, do you still remember our lesson Yes, ma’am.
yesterday?
Then can anyone from the class tell me what Our lesson yesterday is about safety practices
was the lesson tackled yesterday? in masonry.

And what are the Safety Practices in  Listen to the instruction and take note
Masonry? of the precautionary tips given by the
teacher.
 While working, do not engage in house
play.
 Use only tools and equipment that are
in good condition.
 Report any accidents to the teacher, no
matter how minor it is.
 Bend your knees and keep your back
upright when lifting heavy objects. Do
not bend from the waist.

Alright, since you still remember our lesson

yesterday, let us now proceed to our next
lesson.

c. Lesson Proper

Motivation
But before we officially start our new lesson.
Let us take a look at this picture first,

What have you notice in the picture?

Where do this picture commonly found? (Students give their best possible answer)
Why do you think workers wear these
things?
The person in the picture is wearing what we
call the Personal Protective Equipment or PPE
to protect himself from possible accidents in
the workplace.

Lecture Discussion
The PPE regulation covers all private and
public sector workers in general industry that
are exposed to hazardous processes, conditions
and toxic substances.
Here is what the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OHSA) requires for
specific types of PPE.
The first one we have the eye and face Eye and face protection- safety glasses or
protection, will you read (calls a student). face shields are worn any time at work
operations can cause foreign objects to get in
the eye. Eye and face protectors are selected
based on anticipated hazards.

(shows a picture)

Eye and face protection are used to protect

your eyes and faces from danger and/or
accidents. Take for example, during welding,
cutting, grinding, nailing or working with
concrete and/or harmful chemicals or when
exposed to flying particles, or any electrical
hazards including working on energized
electrical system.

Next we have the head protection, will you Head protection- hard hats is a light weight
read (calls a student). protective helmet made of plastic or metal
worn by construction workers. Wear hard hats
when there is a potential for falling objects
from above, bumps to the head from fixed
objects, or of accidental head contact with
electrical hazards.

(shows a picture)
Head protection is used to protect the
workers head from falling objects. In a
construction area for example, there are debris
of concrete that are falling and these may cause
possible injuries if a worker fail to wear hard
hats or helmets. Routinely inspect them for
dents, cracks or deterioration; replace after
heavy blow or electrical shock; maintain in
good condition.

Then we have the hand protection, will you Hand protection- gloves are required to
read (calls a student). protect workers from cuts, scrapes, punctures,
chemical absorption or extreme temperature.
Gloves should fit snuggly.

(shows a picture)

Hand protection like gloves is used to protect

the hands of the workers from cuts, burns,
extreme temperature, etc. a worker cannot
avoid lifting and at the same time touching
objects that may cause them injury. There are
also proper types of gloves for every specific
work. Take for example, heavy-duty rubber
gloves are used for concrete work, welding
gloves for welding jobs and insulated gloves
and sleeves when a worker is exposed to
electrical hazard.

Lastly we have the hearing protection, will Hearing protection- ear plugs or ear muffs of
you read (calls a student). cotton and rubber that is fitted to the air canal
for protection against the entry of loud noises.
Use these in high noise work areas where
chainsaws or heavy equipment are used; clean
or replace ear plugs or ear muffs regularly.
(shows a picture)

Hearing protection is used by workers to

protect their ears from excessive noise in the
working area. Take for example in a
construction site, there are equipment or power
tools that are emit noise, constant boring of
nails, lifting of boulders, etc. and these noises
sometimes exceeds at the capacity of the noise
that are ears can handle which is less than 90
decibels that is why workers are advice to wear
ear plugs and ear muffs all the time.

Activity
Since we have finished our lesson on the
types of Personal Protective Equipment. Let us
now have a short activity. Name the different
types of PPE you can see in this picture:

 Helmet
 Goggles
 Safety shoes
 Ear plugs
 Mask
 Gloves
Generalization
1. What is the significance of wearing a
complete PPE at work?

2. Enumerate the different types of PPE and

their uses.

IV. Evaluation:

Direction: Write the name of what type of PPE is shown in the picture.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Key to Correction:

1. Head protection/Hard hats/Helmets

2. Ear protection/Ear plugs/Ear muffs
3. Eye and face protection/Safety glasses/Face shields
4. Foot protection/Boots/Safety shoes
5. Hand protection/Gloves

V. Assignment:
