CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of The Study

Social media has become a part of everyone's daily life. This cannot be

denied because every day people access social media. According to The Statistica,

the number of social media users is bound to reach a staggering amount of 3.02

billion users per month. This is about one-third of the world’s population. It could

be through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Instagram

which is currently very popular among the public, especially young people.

The definition with reference to social media generally known as websites

and application that allow people to communicate and share information on the

internet using a computer or smartphone. Social media has became the main choice

in communicating and the exchange of information becomes very easy to access so

that people can get updates more quickly about events that just happened. Media

social has become the backbone as a means of communication in this digital age

(Kemendag, 2014:43). With interesting and diverse social media contents and ease

of operation, it's no wonder people prefer social media as the main communication

tool.

Not only that, social media also being used to do business marketing.

These platforms have radically changed the marketing industry. With much fewer

resources and shorter time, a more impactful marketing campaign can be launched

on social media platforms. And as seen from the large number of people who access
social media, therefore social media has become the best option for promoting

business.

Over time social media began to reveal the negative effect of its presence

aside from the many positive things that can be obtained from the use of social

media. In essence, everyone is free to express their opinion as long as it is still in

the realm of positive or not referring to bad things. But it cannot be denied that the

presence of irresponsible social media users who use social media for negative

things as well as adverse impacts on other users. For examples news hoaxes, online

shopping frauds, slander spreads, hate speech and many more cases related to social

media abuse. The hate speech and slander spreading are the two things that are most

often found when accessing social media. A person's ethics can be seen from the

way he kneels. According to Sumaryono (1995) Ethics is the truth and untruth based

on human nature which is manifested through the human will in action.

There have been many cases of social media abuse happening. This is

because netizens can express their opinions freely. But most of the netizens don't

think about the aftermath, especially when they have been ignited by

disappointment and anger. With the rampant cases happened from social media, the

writer choose to study the hate speech that came from netizens' comments in

response to statements or public figure posts that were viral on social media. The

writer interested to identify the type of off-record from the netizen’s comments

using politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) and also categorize the hate

speech based on circular of the National Police Chief NUMBER SE/06/X/2015


concerning Examinations Hate Speech. The writer also would like to identify the

most used type of hate speech from netizens’ comments.

1.2 The Problem Of The Study

1. What are the categorization of hate speech in the netizen’s comments ?

2. What is the most dominant of hate speech categorization used by netizen?

1.3 The Objective Of The Study

1. To categorized the hate speech on netizens’ comments

2. To find most dominant hate speech categorization

1.4 The Scope of The Study

This research was limited to off-record politeness theory by from Brown

and Levinson (1987) and classified the netizen’s comments with the theory. The

data will be taken from netizents’ comments on Twitter toward Ustad Somad and

Awkarin as public figure the writer have choosen. The categorization of hate speech

will be based on circular of the National Police Chief NUMBER SE/06/X/2015

concerning Examinations Hate Speech explained the notion of Hate Speech may be

in the form of a criminal offense regulated in the Criminal Code and other criminal

provisions outside of the Criminal Code, [2] which takes the form of: 1)

Humiliation, 2) Defamation, 3) Blasphemy, 4) Unpleasant deeds, 5) Provoke, 6)

Incite, and 7) Spread lies. The writer also would like to identify the most used type

of hate speech from netizens’ comments.


1.5 The Significances of The Study

The results of this research are expected to give teoritical and practical

beneficial uses of language.

Theoricially

1. To be a new perspective in studying in the use of language, especially social

media

2. Become a new model for language reference in social media

Practically

1. This research is expeted to be a material reference for further research

2. Useful for readers to be wiser in the use of social media

3. For student of English Department to enrich their knowledge on language

used.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2. Hate Speech

Hate Speech is a controversial term for speech, which is intended to

reduce, intimidate, incite or violence or do harm to someone based on race,

ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. This term

includes both written and oral communication. In the legal sense, the Speech of

Hate is words, behavior, writing, or performance that is prohibited because it can

trigger action violence and prejudice on the part of the statement's perpetrators or

the victims from that action.

2.4.1 Hate Speech Category

In the Circular letter of the National Police Chief NUMBER SE / 06 / X / 2015

about the Examination Hate Speech explained the notion of Hate Speech (Hate

Speech) may be in the form of a criminal offense regulated in the Criminal Code

and other criminal provisions outside of the Criminal Code, [2] which takes the

form of:

1) Humiliation

2) Defamation

3) Blasphemy

4) Unpleasant deeds

5) Provoke

6) Incite
7) Spread lies

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive qualitative

research interprets and tells the data concerned with the current situation, attitudes

and views that occur in society. According to Crocker (2009), qualitative research

entails colleting primarily textual data and examining it using interpretive analysis.

It means that the method provides clear description about the problems of research.

3.2 The Source Of The Data

The source of the data is taken from netizens’ comments from social media

platform Twitter. Responding to the racist stamen by Ustad Somad and Awkarin's

act in responding to netizens' demands for the use of artist works taken without

including the artist's name or source. The number of netizens’ comments taken are

one hundred for each of the public figure case.

3.3 The Technique Of Collecting The Data

In collecting the data, the writer done few steps such as :

1) Find the thread of the news on Twitter

2) Trying to find out the netizens’ reply which contain hate speech

3) Screen capture the comments as evidence


3.4 The Technique Of Analyzing The Data

The technique to analyze the data are :

1) Find out the netizens’ comments on twitter about the public figure case

2) Analyze the comments based on off-record theory

3) Categorized the comments

4) Identify the most dominant or most used type of speech hate and off-record

theory

5) Explain the reason why one become the most dominant
